HELP - WiFi Catcher error

Here is the pop-up I am getting:

Problem Description:
Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locator
Your Wi-Fi Catcher band configuration is not compatible with your WLAN card band configuration.

I cannot connect to my wireless connection. I have not done anything different and was able to connect last night (and for the previous 2 months).

The error message gives me an option to "automatically change your Wi-Fi Catcher band configuration." I have tried this, but it has not worked.

Has anyone seen this that can help?

Any updates on this issue?

I'm receiving the same pop-up at start up and having the same symptoms; using an Inspiron 1520 with Windows Vista.

I've tried refreshing the networks and no wireless networks appear.  Previously, several appeared including mine (I live in an apartment so I could see several networks when this was working).

- From the BIOS, wi-fi is enabled.
- From the Device Manager, my wireless NIC (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG) is working fine and has the most current driver.
- From Dell QuickSet, under Networking, Wi-Fi Catcher/Radio Control Options:
  - Switch:  Status = Enabled, Controls = Wi-Fi
  - Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locater:   Status = Enabled, Mode = Any Available Network

I am having the same problem with my Studio 1535 laptop, Vista x64.

Every time this happens, my WIFI goes down, and I have to go into the diagnose and repair, which works most of the time.

Also, Suprfetch and Windows Service Host (both part of Vista) stop working.

It seems to have started when I downloaded the recent Dell Recommended WIFI driver update, which is sent to me via email for all updates related to my Studio 1535 laptop.

I think that the new driver is incompatible with WIFI Catcher, which is the program associated with the WIFI switch on the side of the laptop.  I would like to locate the old driver, and replace the new one with the old one, which worked just fine!

If this is true, then something may to be wrong with Dell updates if they tell me a driver is recommended for my laptop, but is in fact incompatible with it.

Any tech help here?

Best,

tlt

Same issue with my XPS M1330

I have tried NUMEROUS 'ideas'.

Reinstalling driver for WLAN card

Uninstalling and reinstalling Quickset

System restore (which failed because of disk error - and then after checkdisk i lost all my restore points)

Running sfc /scannnow

The WLAN service will NOT START.  This appears to be a root issue.

This is second time it is happened - first time i spent 3 hours on phone with dell.  This time i have done everything that we did before - still won' work.

This is a dell support forum - so why do i see no confirmed fixes?  This error is all over hte place with dell machines.  just google it. FRUSTRATING

Hey Zarsky,

That issue is a VERY SERIOUS one.  My Dell service people in the EU also couldn't help me on it -- they said they had never even heard of it, which is hard to believe. That laptop just went from bad to worse and eventually the HD died on me -- incredibly corruptted.  Vista was totally corrupted. I agree that this is a ROOT ISSUE -- great way to put it -- and thta Dell really needs to fix this one.  Tons of people are reporting this with many different Dell Laptops.  I now have a Dell Desktop and don't use wireless due to this issue -- I hard wire it with a direct cable connection. The one thing I didn't try with my laptop was to reformat the entire HD.  I don't know if that will resolve the issue, but you can try it.  Really sorry to hear that Dell hasn't dealt with this.

So here is what I ended up doing-

saved ALL my data and favorites including pics to an external hard drive

during bootup I hit F8 multiple times and went into the recovery center

i selected optoin to restore to factory build.

well that fixed it.  but i had to reinstall all my apps and copy back the data.

pain.

Hey Zarsky,

Great that it is working.  I hope that subsequent Windows updates work for you.  Watch out for the Dell driver updates.  As I noted above, I think that the problem occurred after I updated the driver.   GOOD LUCK!
