Getting my windows serial key from the service tag

I've bought an inspiron 7520 with windows 8 on it.

i've just replaced my hd to ssd and now when I've installed windows again I'm in need of my serial number (whoops, should have thought of it before wiped my other HD :\ ).

I checked and don't have a sticker with the windows serial on the computer. so is there a way to retrieve it sing the service tag?

Use the RW-Everything program to view your BIOS embedded system locked preinstallation key:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/a-clean-install-of-windows-8-1/microsoft-product-activation/obtaining-your-oem-bios-embedded-slp-product-key-using-rw-everything-oem-only/

If your product key is rejected by the installation media then likely the product key is for Windows 8.0 and the media is a Windows 8.1 .iso. Microsoft unfortunately made the deployment installation of the Windows 8.1/Windows 8 Service Pack 1 ridiculously difficult causing many users frustration.

To overcome these difficulties you may need to install with a generic product key:

Then you need to change key and activate after installation:

@jaguar246

Try to find a Dell Windows 8 DVD.

If you can't find one, download Windows 8 ISO (  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO  ) and use Rufus to create a bootable USB flash drive. Use the USB flash drive to install Windows 8.1.  Hopefully your laptop has Windows 8 key embedded on motherboard.
