U2419H, iPad, not showing photos in portrait mode?

Hi Guys,

I have the Dell Ultrasharp U2419H Monitor. And I am using it as an external display with my iPad Pro. So whenever I want to view anything on big screen, I either do an Airplay or Mirror My iPad to the external screen which in this case is the Dell Monitor.

But I want to view things in Portrait a mode on the monitor, so when I have something in portrait mode on my iPad, lets say a Photo and when I rotate my iPad and also rotate the Dell Monitor to Portrait Orientation I should be able to see the Photo in Portrait a mode on the Dell Monitor Screen isn’t it ? But the photo does not rotate to portrait mode on the Dell Monitor Screen even when I turn the monitor to portrait mode. Why is this happening ? Why is the Photo on the Dell Monitor not rotating to Portrait a mode when I rotate my iPad into Portrait mode.

@augustya  Physically rotating the display to portrait mode doesn't do anything.  The source device, in this case your iPad, has no way of knowing that you've done that, and therefore has no way of knowing that it should adjust the video signal it's sending.  Some displays have software to manage this automatically, but they then require you to have a USB connection between the display and source to provide this type of signal information and also require you to have software installed on the source device to have the source adjust its output.  The iPad doesn't give you that option.  The iPad outputs a consistent resolution signal, and it will adjust its presentation based on rotating the iPad between portrait and landscape, since the iPad of course knows when you've rotated the iPad itself, but it can't do anything about you rotating the display.  And of course having a portrait iPad video signal shown on a display that's set up in typical landscape orientation doesn't use much of the external display's area.  But to my knowledge there's no way to get an iPad to send a portrait video signal.

@augustya  I wouldn’t say “not ever” since you never know what Apple might do later on. But to give you some background, here’s how it works. Let’s say you have a 1920x1080 display. If you rotate it, it effectively becomes a 1080x1920 display. In order to utilize that setup properly, you need your source device to actually draw its content that way. In Windows, this is achieved by going to Windows Display Settings and selecting an orientation other than the standard Landscape, such as Portrait 90 degrees clockwise or Portrait 90 degrees counterclockwise — unless you have a device that has an orientation sensor built in and can switch this automatically, such as a 2-in-1 convertible tablet. As of this writing, iOS and iPadOS do not support changing this sort of setting for external displays, regardless of whether you use AirPlay Screen Mirroring or an actual cable. In fact you can’t even choose the resolution or refresh rate to use. Of course that can always change, but as of now that’s not available. And it’s not a limitation of the Dell display. It’s a limitation of iOS and iPadOS.

Ok so in short what you are saying that there is no way that I can view portrait images of my iPad in a Portrait mode on the Dell Monitor by doing a Mirroring or a Casting ? Not now not ever ? It has not been yet incorporated ?

What about with a hard connection like a cable connecting the two devices ?

@jphughan

I also want to connect my windows Laptop to the Dell U2419H monitor that I have. The Laptop has these ports VGA, HDMI (But I don’t know what kind of HDMI Port is that because the HDMI cable provided by Dell Monitor is not going into my Laptop HDMI port. my Laptop is a 2014 released product. And then it has USB-A port and the headphone jack slot.

so how can I have Laptop output connected to the Dell U2419H Monitor ? Can you help me here ?

@augustya  What exact laptop do you have?  The way you described the HDMI port makes me wonder if the laptop port or the cable you're using is actually DisplayPort rather than HDMI, because if you had an HDMI port and an HDMI cable, then the cable would fit into the port.  But if it's not clear what laptop you have, I'm not sure what outputs you have.  If you reply back with that information I'll do what I can to help, but for future reference you should really create your own topic for this, since it's not related to this topic.  Creating your own topic gives your question more visibility and also avoids taking an existing discussion off-topic.

@jphughan Yes I understand your point about creating a seperate topic about this. I will keep that in mind.

The Laptop I have is Acer E1-510

And I have already tried inserting the HDMI cable that I have got with the Dell Monitor and it does not go into the HDMI port of the Acer Laptop.

@augustya  Ok, the cable you have is very likely a DisplayPort cable, not an HDMI cable.  The documentation for that laptop confirms that it has an HDMI output, but the U2419H has both HDMI and DisplayPort inputs.  And Dell does tend to ship DisplayPort cables with their displays because that's a common connector found on desktop GPUs and laptop docking stations (both of which often have more DP outputs than HDMI outputs if they offer both), and it also allows DisplayPort daisy chains to be set up, which isn't possible with HDMI.  So you just need to get an actual HDMI cable and you should be fine.

@augustya  Once you have a regular HDMI cable that you can actually plug into your laptop's HDMI output and the display's HDMI input, you just set the display to its HDMI input (check the display's manual if you don't know how to change inputs) and then your laptop will start using the display.  Then if you go into Windows Display Settings, you can choose whether you want to use the external display in Duplicate mode (shows the same thing as your laptop display) or Extend mode (use it as an additional display).  If that isn't enough detail, then I'd suggest reading the manuals of your equipment and maybe doing some Googling, because how to use an external display is very basic information.  And at this point you've posted more in this thread than the person who created it, even though your questions have nothing to do with the reason this topic was created, so this has gone way off-topic now.

@DELL-Chris M

So the Dell U2419H Monitor only ships with a Display Port cable is that what you guys are saying ?

@jphughan  Did you also check my Laptop Port Output slot in the Product details after I gave you my Laptop Model number ? it has a HDMI port only ? And not a Display Port slot is it ?

@augustya  Yes, I read the manual for your laptop model.  (You can of course do that yourself if you want to verify...)  You could also check the U2419H itself.  Look at the label around the port where the cable plugs in.  Does it say DP or HDMI?  Or you could just look at Google Image diagrams for HDMI and DisplayPort connectors and compare them to the cable you're looking at and the ports available on your laptop.  This really shouldn't be difficult to figure out.
