My Screen Broke, Cracked, Smashed

Hi all,

Worst case scenario just happened for my laptop studio 15.

I was on the train home and I packed my bag tightly and stuffed some work inbetween the screen and keyboard so I could work whilst on the train.

Got my laptop out mid-journey only to discover there is a crack covering approximately 80% of the screen.

This is complete accidental damage and therefore not covered by the warranty.

any help would be much apprecated, I do not have complete care and only the simple 2 year CAR (Collect and Return) warranty.

Interested in screens that are selling, or companies that fix screens too. This is UK please, any any help is much apprecaited.

My laptop is only days old (brought at the start of the month), its from the Outlet store.

You should be able to find a new screen on ebay. I just had to replace my hinges, bezel and back cover for a e1505 .. it's not very hard to do. Look at Dell's manuals on line but also search for independant ones online. A lot of people take them apart and show pictures on how to do it. Just don't force anything and take your time. But screens are usually just a half dozen screws. But you will also have to find out how to disconnect the wiring.. which isn't hard either.

Good luck

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

I have built my desktop computer which wasn't too hard, a laptop maybe a bit more complicated with the smaller components but nonetheless as you say maybe easy I have looked online - on ebay listings they even tell you how to replace it.

The only way I want to hang fire on this is because I have got house insurance and I've got this two year CAR warranty.

Do Dell do any repairs what so ever?

Thanks again for the help.

Contact the Out of Warranty support number.  The one for the US is linked below.  Expect a bill of about $500 to replace a screen.

Hi guys,

Would like to give you an update as to what happened.

First thing is I got in touch with Dell and my insurance broker, and fortunately my insurance agreed to get the laptop repaired by Dell.

Initally the quote for the repair of the screen was around £230, but I explained to the technician that I am a student and very poor and I had recieved quotes around the internet for around £120-£150. I got the quote down to apprently rock bottom price at £189 for a replacement of the screen and delivery.

However I have just recieved the laptop today and the screen resolution is not the initial "Display : 15.6in Widescreen High Definition (1366X768) WLED with TrueLife" and I cannot set it to this resolution, as a result I will further my inquiry with Dell and make a complaint.  One would infer that because my screen is just an average 15.6" screen and it is not WLED or TrueLife.

I would like to say people, please keep your persistence up if you have a similar issue, keep on trying to get the lowest price possible and if you have anything wrong with the service then just complain.

Thank you
