My laptop cannot power off

I have a Inspiron N5110 laptop. Recently, it cannot power off. It runs Windows 7.

When I try to put it to sleep, either through start menu, or by closing the lid, the screen will turn off but the lights are still on and the fan is still running. Worse, I can't recover from the sleep. Pressing a key, moving the mouse nor pressing the power button can wake it. I have to do a hard restart.

When I try to hibernate or shut it down, the shutting down screen will appear, after a while the screen will turn off but again the fan and the lights won't. I have to hold the power button to but its power. But when I start it back up Windows will tell me it shut down normally (only for hibernate and shut down; for sleep Windows will tell me the shut down was abnormal).

Please help, it's really frustrating to not being able to sleep and have to hard restart every time.

Hi,

Thank you for reaching us.

Was there any changes made to the PC settings ? When was the last time it worked fine ?

You may try updating the Video drivers and BIOS to the latest version from www.dell.com/support .

Once that's done, try putting the PC to sleep and hibernation manually to check if that resolves the issue.

Thank you

Try updating the BIOS from the link here to see if that will solve the issue: www.dell.com/.../DriversDetails;fileId=3002719441&osCode=W764&productCode=inspiron-15r-n5110&languageCode=EN&categoryId=BI

There were no change made to PC settings. It was last fine on Tuesday.

I updated BIOS, but it didn't make any difference.

Hi,

Can you try a system restore to last week to see if that resolves the problem?

Thank you
