keyboard volume buttons not working

I have a 2 year old 8200 series which has volume control buttons on the keyboard.  They don't work anymore and it is annoying to have to click the volume icon in the taskbar every time I need to adjust.  I have tried everything but cannot figure out how to get these buttons to work again.  Anyone else have this problem and how did you resolve it?  Thanks.

Hi,

Has the operating system been reloaded ? When you run the resource disk to install the drivers, it loads software that enables the buttons. If has been reloaded and that has not been done they wont work. ( or a hard drive replacement ? )

Chris,  The operating system has not been reloaded.  I reinstalled the driver from the driver and utilities disk and the buttons still do not work.  I may have to all Dell Service...  Thanks for responding.

Hello, just wondering if you were able to resolve this problem.  After my wife came back from vacation the volume button didn't work.  Since I didn't have my laptop for a week, I don't know what may have happened to cause this.  At first it was just the volume up, but now it's both the up and down that are affected.  I can still use the fn + PageUp/PageDn, but prefer the single-touch keypad buttons.

Hi,

If they failed one at a time, it may be dust underneath. I have seen the power switch do the same thing. Try removing the keyboard ( take the battery and mains lead out first ) and hinge cover, and clean the contacts with alcohol, The switch is an open type with contacts on a PCB, and conductive rubber or foil under the hinge cover.

SUCCESS!!! Cleaning the contacts under the hinge panel is just what the doctor ordered!  thanks for pointing me in that direction.  Volume buttons work great after a little cleaning. Awesome!
