External monitors shut off when Lid closes

I have a Studio 1555 running Vista 32-bit.

I can get an external monitor to operate off the HDMI or VGA port of my laptop.  However, when I shut the lid to my laptop, the external monitor, regardless of the type of connection, will loose video signal from the machine.  I have gone through control panel->power options->system settings to tell the computer to do nothing happens when closing the lid on battery and AC power.  This has not worked though.  The external monitor will still lose signal from the machine when the lid is shut.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Don’t know about your setup specifically but in my case the choice of whether or not the external monitor will shut off (or just loses it image) was not in the power options and how closing the lid is to behave, but in the options of the video card. There I can choose which output to use, the lid or the external monitor. See maybe you have such an option in your graphic card properties.
