U3818DW, MacBook Pro, USB Type-C not working

Hi,

I would like to know how I can connect my new U3818DW monitor to my 16" MacBook Pro as it does not work.

I have a brand new BELKIN super fast USB-C thunderbolt 5K USB-C Thunderbolt cable and it does not 'see' the cable. I also tried on my MacBook Air, but no connection.

Your U3818DW has a USB Type-C input so it must work?

I tried an older/slower USB Type-C cable that works, but video is flickering so thought it was lacking cable speed and bought the most expensive 80 euro cable available.

Please let me know what to do as I like to start using my new 1000 euro monitor.

@sndr23  No it will not.  That's what I mentioned in my reply.  A USB-C to DP cable only allows your Mac to send a video signal, like any regular video cable.

@sndr23  Did you buy an “active” Thunderbolt 3 cable that has signal booster chips built into the cable in order to allow longer cable lengths? Based on the price you paid, you probably did. Active TB3 cables do not work as regular USB-C cables except for power and USB 2.0 data, which isn’t enough for running a display. I wrote a long post about the various differentiating factors of USB-C and TB3 cables and addressed this, linked below. Try a USB-C cable that is rated for supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode, either USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.1 Gen 2, and 100W USB Power Delivery. The Cable Matters 201025-BLK-1m supports all of those standards and is far less expensive than what you paid for your Thunderbolt 3 cable.

Otherwise, it’s possible that the issue is that you’re working with Macs. Obviously they SHOULD work, but a surprising number of Mac users are reporting problems with recent Dell displays, and it’s not entirely clear where the underlying problem is in those cases. However, those cases are typically not behavior like you're describing where nothing is detected at all.

thanks, sounds clear.. will check that..

In the meantime, I read elsewhere that a USB-C >> DISPLAYPORT cable gives better results, so bought that one an hour ago.. also much cheaper.. if that does not work will buy the one you suggested..

@sndr23  Happy to help.  A USB-C to DisplayPort cable works perfectly well, and I use them myself, but then of course your USB-C port is only being used to send a video signal.  It's no longer receiving power from the display or running USB data in order to use the USB ports built into the display -- so it's not as functional.  But if you're fine charging your system from another source and don't care about the USB ports built into the display, then a USB-C to DP cable would be perfectly fine, and it would certainly be simpler than a "full" USB-C connection, which means fewer opportunities for problems.

BTW..do you know,  will that Thunderbolt > DISPLAYPORT cable actually charge my mac?

Hi,

I just received my 3rd cable, now the advised one from Cable Matters. But still the same bad video display with flickering/ghost images. For now, I give up. A waste of money on this 'premium' monitor.

Hi

I use the Uptab converter (link below) for displayport to usb-c and power . Then i connect one of the usb-A uplink to be able to get usb 3.0 connection here you can use standard usb-a to usb-c. if you use the usb-c from the display you will only get usb 2.0. See below

Only usb 2.0 over usb-c on dell monitor.
