ST2421l - Dark Spot

Purchased TWO st2421l monitors in December of 2012 (19 months ago) from Staples.

One of them started displaying a dark spot (as shown in pic) several weeks ago.

It's the monitor, because I unplugged it from everything and ran the self-test diagnostics.  The dark spot appears on all of the diagnostic screens.  (except black of course)

If I turn the monitor off and on, the spot disappears for a while (sometimes several hours), but eventually it comes back.  Same is true if I go into the OSD and switch the input back and forth between auto and the actual input.

I've been in IT for 30 years and have had, and have seen, a lot of monitors - never one that lasted less than two years.  This is terrible.

And for me, my two monitors match, and it's nice - not only cosmetically, but they're side-by-side, and the exact height so it's easy on the eyes when transitioning from one to the other.  Any new monitor replacement, and it will just not be the same.

From the looks of it on these forums (laptops as well), Dell has a problem with monitors (backlight or whatever) this is just not conducive with quality.

I hope Dell will make this right with me - I'm not a rich person, and monitors should last more than 20 months.  I'm 7 months out of warranty, but I'm hoping Dell with look at this and agree that this should not happen to a quality product.

Should I be left to fend on my own, does anyone know which part may be causing this to happen?

Thanks,

DC

Any thoughts by anyone yet?

Does the fact that If I turn the monitor off and on or if I go into the OSD and switch the input back and forth between auto and the actual input make the spot disappear (for a while), give anybody any clues as to which part may be defective?

I've read some posts about bad capacitors...does the off/on symptom imply such a failure?

Thanks.

The primary purpose of this forum is to be user to user, not user to Dell. Once out of warranty, nothing can be done on our end. If purchased directly from us, you would have received the option of purchasing warranty for years 2 $19 /3 $29 /4 $39 /5 $49. But Staples only offered one year. You can try doing the Factory Reset in the OSD (On Screen Display), but this appears to be an internal monitor component defect.

I do not know. All of the failure analysis is done by the manufacturer, not us. We do not even have monitor repair/disassembly documentation. You could take it to a local TV repair center to see if they can diagnose the issue. Possible parts site:

With my absolute guarantee to NOT hold you to it, would you venture to make an educated guess as to which component?  Even narrowing it down to 2 or 3 possibilities would help.  My research has been suggesting a capacitor or two.
