Moving with a XPS 8940

Hey all, I'm about to move my computer about 3 hours away for college and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for moving it? Just bringing it in my car. Found a box that fits the computer perfectly so all I have to do is put some packing paper ontop. Do I need to take out my gpu at all? I dont have any sort of antistatic bag for it since the computer didnt come with one so I'm not sure what to put that in. Probably will end up putting it on my passenger side seat so it lays nice and flat and I can see how much its moving. Any recommendations?

I can't give a guaranteed answer, but I've moved long distance with PC's with no ill effects. The only 'moving' parts on might consider is mechanical hard drive IF the heads are over the platter(s). Would not be if the PC was shutdown properly..

Some water cooled systems (8940 stock is not one of those) might need special attention.

No need for an anti-static bag, but then again, I never used them.

One thing I would suggest, make sure everything inside is 'tight', all connections can cards/RAM seated correctly. Moving by car, the issue would be less of a worry than for one shipping it via a carrier to a different location. For the Monitor, might want to put some 'bubble wrap' or a towel over the screen, so it doesn't get scratched inadvertently.

Don't leave cables attached either. Bag them all, and if you are not sure how to put them back, LABEL them, can use tape on the cable end and above the socket, using matching numbers on each end. However, in most cases you'd probably only have the 2 power cables (should be interchangeable) and one for the monitor. Maybe speaker ones too? Not hard to figure out.

Still, don't drop it :-)

If you will put it laying down flat, there is no need to remove the graphics card.  Just be sure to have it lays down with motherboard side on the ground.  Verify that no disk in optical drive and nothing plugs into I/O ports.

You've put 3 answers here. Basically the same.

Are you having a problem seeing your replies after you post them? When you post something, the page should reload. Are you not seeing this?

May need to clear the CACHE in your browser, or at least close it and re-open it. Do you see your posts then?

One more thingy... You might find that the motherboard battery died while PC was disconnected from the mains during the move. In that case you could get a (3 amber + 1 white) repeating blink code in the PC's power button or maybe it just fails to power on normally.

You might want to consider replacing that battery (CR2032) and confirming that PC still boots properly, before you move. That way, if it doesn't boot or work properly after the move, you'll have already ruled the battery out...

Even though the XPS 8940 has the anti-sag bar, I would still remove the GPU, If you are using the stock pancake cooler or the Dell Tower cooler those are fine.  Just the last thing you want to have happen is the PCB get cracked on the GPU or the PCI e-slot on the motherboard.
