Help: Can't Bypass Adapter Warning

Hi everyone. I recently connected a Dell U2421HE monitor to my G5 5590 laptop via USB-C. Everytime I start the machine I'm presented with the following warning:

"You have attached a power adapter to a port that does not accept power. Attach a power adapter to your systems power port."

I can verify a power adapter is already plugged into the power connector and supplying power, so a) I don't understand why such a warning is displayed and b) I'd like to know how I can disable this unnecessary message. I have to click on "continue" and wait for another reboot for the laptop to boot normally. Reboot cycles are not short on this machine so having to wait for a second reboot is time consuming. There are two options dealing with warnings in BIOS under POST behavior, Adapter Warnings and Warnings and Errors, neither of which can be used to disable this annoying message. There's no option to disable power delivery via USB-C on the monitor. Is there some other option in BIOS to disable this message? The only workaround I've found so far to prevent this message from appearing and having to wait for a reboot is to press F12 for boot options when the boot logo shows and start the boot drive manually.

Cheers.

Well, I'm pleased to report the bug has been fixed in the latest BIOS v1.17.1 - the annoying message appears one final time after the BIOS update but then disappears for good. POST behaviour > Adapter warning can be left checked for pertinent messages, e.g. when plugging in a 90W adapter instead of the recommended 180W one. Really glad this was fixed.

Cheers.

BIOS : POST behaviour > Adapter warning

This should have done the trick, unchecking that option worked for me.

Contact Tech Support, this needs to be escalated to engineering team

Hi XPS_Man. POST behaviour > Adapter warning is the first option I disabled without success. Can you confirm you tried this on a 5590? I wonder if it's an issue related to this particular machine or the series in general.

Cheers.

Don't have a 5590 with me

But this option has worked for different models

Machine does have an HDMI port, so if you are not using USB dock of monitor than you can skip USB c cable

Yeah, the USB-C docking capability is exactly what I was looking for in a new monitor. I've submitted a technical support request via email to Dell's local support team and reported the bug. Hopefully the message will reach someone in engineering and they'll fix it in a future firmware release. Until then the F12 workaround will at least save some boot time.

Cheers.

I regret to say the problem has returned after a brief period: The offending warning message is once again showing up. It seems to have occurred after I changed the boot order in BIOS. I will attempt to downgrade to the previous BIOS version and upgrade as I did before to see if this helps.

Looks like there's more ironing out to do on the latest BIOS v1.17.1 - and that I'll have to do the F12 dance a while longer.

Ok, I have figured out exactly why and when the problem returns: Unplugging the monitor after the BIOS flash. The system seems to lose the correct setting at this point and the annoying warning message is once again displayed when booting the machine. The problem appears to be unrelated to the latest BIOS v1.17.1 since the previous version acts exactly the same way.

I have figured out three workarounds to this problem so far:

a) Press F12 when booting and select the desired boot device.

b) Plug in the monitor after POST, while or after the OS loads.

c) Perform a BIOS flash while the monitor is plugged in and don't unplug it thereafter.

None of these methods are practical, so it would be nice if Dell's engineers would pull their heads out of the sand and actually fix this annoying problem. Both laptop and monitor are branded Dell after all.

This solution is not valid anymore.

I agree with this most recent post. I too have made the BIOS changes you mentioned above. The problem persists and these workarounds are impractical. I'm saddened that Dell hasn't solved this!

In my case, I'm using a Dell dock, wherein I have two monitors plugged. The dock then connects to my Dell G3 15 laptop via a USB-C cable. The exact same warning message pops up upon booting for me and is so annoying — especially when you want to perform a quick restart, walk away from the computer, then come back to find it only halfway booted. Ridiculous!

My computer needs to recognize when I have an actual power adapter plugged in, and I should be able to disable this warning, and have it actually stay disabled.

I found a solution! In my case instead of choosing Continue on Warnings in the BIOS settings (POST Behavior > Warnings and Errors), I selected Continue on Warnings and Errors and it worked.

I was receiving a warning, about the charger not been recognized, and not charging the battery….I did the same: uncheck that option:

BIOS : POST behaviour > Adapter warning

The warning disappeared, but the battery discharged completelly, and the charger adapter continues non recognizable.
now the laptop is off, and I cannot start it at all.

reviewed the output voltage with a Voltmeter, and it is correct : 19.5 V…. Please help EL_LEQUE_DELAE  JAHUU
