Installing HD 3850 512 AGP card into Dell Dimension 8300

I have an old Dell Dim. 8300 with 4gb ram, and recently got an old ATI Radeon HD 3850 512 AGP video card that for fun I would like to install and try out.  I do not have the card yet, but was wondering about power cables.  The card does not come with any cables, etc., but the newer 600 watt power supply has a whole bunch of extra cables to it, and one is an 8 prong, (not sure if that is the correct term).  I am wondering if I can just plug that right into the card provided that it fits, and if it happens to, will this have a negative impact on the card?  Thank you.

The Aux power connection on the 3850 AGP is REQUIRED for the card to work properly.  600W may be too small I would say 650W EPS12v would be minimum required.   Also the latest Catalyst Drivers Do not work on anything lower than HD5XXX.   Furthermore AGP versions of HD3XXX cards required specific CATALYST 12 drivers to work.

The 3850 comes with an 8 pin connector for the Aux power.  If the power supply does not also have the correct connector its likely that it will not work properly.   The only adapter that I would trust is a 2X 6 pin to 8 pin cable.  This means it expects to draw 300watts of 12Volts which is why a 600w power supply is too small.

Antec HCG 620 power  or  Corsair TX650 has 8 pin and 6 pin power connections on the supply.

Corsair calls this PCI-Express Connector: 2 x 6+2-Pin

EPS 12V certified supplies are what is needed.

Okay, thank you very much for the info. Do you know where the best place would be to find an aux. power connection, and also which would I need?  I did check for HD 3850 power connections specifically, but no dice.  Thanks again.

Okay, thank you for all of your help on this.  I can take the 650 watt p.s. out of another machine.  Do you know  the best place to purchase one, and if I just need to look for a 2x 6 pin to 8 pin adapter?  Also, do these older cards like this use more power?

I'm trying use this configuration, dimension 8300 with an HD 3850. Even with the drivers above and a 650 watt psu it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. When it doesn't the Dell boot up screen is fragmented and windows does not start, seems random.
