m15 R5, RTX 3060, display and outgoing display signal suddenly stopped working

Hi everyone,

I have been using this laptop for over a year now and never had this problem occur before. Earlier this week, when connected to an external monitor via the USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port on the back with DisplayPort, the image suddenly froze for a few seconds and went to black, stating no signal was coming through.

These are the things I tried next:
1) Tried HDMI port instead, same result.

2) Tried laptop monitor instead black screen.

3) Reset laptop, noticed black screen and 2 amber 7 blue error code which means "Display failure - SBIOS message" according to https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-ca/alienware-m15-r5-laptop/alienware-m15-ryzen-edition-r5-service-manual/system-diagnostic-lights?guid=guid-5e7a486c-39a9-40d5-8e4b-08df6fb256b6&lang=en-us.

4) Reset laptop and held onto "D" for Dell display test, noticed very faint changing of color on screen from red, blue, etc. but it was extremely dim, nearly black.

5) Unplugged battery inside laptop and held onto the power button to drain excess charge, no change.

6) Took to repair shop, agreed that there was no physical damage to the monitor and that it was odd that both the laptop display and outgoing signal was affected, suggesting it may be a faulty motherboard.

This appeared to have happened out of the blue. There weren't any recent hardware changes to the laptop or to the activities I typically do on the laptop (just videogames and schoolwork.)

Any thoughts?

Hi Refercto welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

Was the Alienware m15 R5 (5/4/2021) purchased from Dell with Dell warranty?

Thank you for a good opening post which revealed no function of both the Integrated and the Discrete GPU on the system board (aka motherboard). Combine this with your LCD BIST and note very faint changing of color on screen from red, blue, etc. but it was extremely dim, nearly black. Seemingly a PSU voltage rail on the system board has failed, the fix is to install replacement system board. @crimsom It looks like a replacement board on Ebay ranges from $400 and up. Unfortunately, my warranty ended earlier this year. Thank you for the clear explanation!

Hi Refercto thank you for sharing update.

Have you considered $100 Dell Laptop Repair | Dell Repair | Laptop Repair | Notebook Service Center (parts-people.com). They will first diagnose your laptop's problem and contact you with your options. They will always attempt to repair your existing parts before just replacing them, but if you do need parts replaced, they already have them in stock.
