Download Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint?
Is it possible to download these office applications free somehow online .... or must I purchase?

If you want the (legal) Microsof Office applications you will have to open the pocketbook and buy them.
There are some Open Office applications around that may be compatible with MS Office applications. Do a web search. I looked at these about a year ago and they were "free".
