Data Domain: STORAGE-00009 | RAID Protection is in critical state - The system will shut down

Summary: If a Data Domain (DD) system has encountered multiple disk (2 or more) failures and resulting RAID reconstructions cannot proceed or fail to progress then as a matter of protection against data-loss, the system initiates a shut-down. ...

Symptoms

Affected Systems:
  • All DD systems
Alert Details and Symptoms:
  • Event Code: STORAGE-00009
  • Event Summary:
Two or more disks are failed and the RAID protection is in critical state for over a considerable period of time. If an additional disk fails, there might be permanent loss of data. The system will shut down.
  • Multiple disk failure encountered (AND)
  • Any RAID6 disk group degraded by two disks (AND)
  • No spares available for reconstruction of failed disks (OR)
  • RAID reconstruction not progressing

Cause

Data Domain Operating System (DDOS) actively manages the underlying disks/storage (RAID). If a multiple disk failure has been encountered and the resulting RAID reconstructions cannot proceed (no SPAREs) or show no progress over a prolonged period of time, then as a means of protection against data-loss, the system will initiate a graceful shut down.

Resolution

To avoid running out of SPARE disks, ensure any single disk failures are addressed in a timely manner.
That is do not leave 'failed' disks accumulating in a system - get them replaced - the replaced disks become the required SPARES.
If multiple failed disks are encountered in a single event, please contact your DD Service/Support Provider.
