XPS 9500 boot and charging issues

XPS 15 9500

XPS 15 9500

Hi, I have a Dell Laptop XPS 9500 purchased in 2021.

Recently, my laptop started doing the following things:

  1. Stopped charging with the original Dell charger and notified to use the “original adapter”.. I am. Sometimes when I plug it in before booting, it does charge. Sometimes when I plug it in after using on battery for 15+ mins it does charge. So, the charger is NOT the problem.
  2. I replaced the battery as it seemed that could cause a lot of problems. As it sometimes would just shut down when on half battery. But there’s no change in the booting issue. So, the battery is NOT the problem.
  3. Whenever I boot up the laptop it either 1. Restarts and says there was an issue with Windows so you can reboot or go to other settings (it’s a blue screen). It always restarts though. I never got stuck on a black or frozen screen. 2. It works fine.

Today, when booting up, it now only shows the Dell logo on a black background, I hear the fan, caps lock light is on and the charging light is on. No other beeping or lights. But then it just turns off.. This is withouth the charger.

With the charger plugged in before booting, it starts fine.

I do not understand what’s going on. I feel like it could be several things. And I’m not a big fan of reformatting and then for example discovering I need a new motherboard or something.

Please help.

Given the symptoms, it's not likely related to the operating system -- it's far more likely a mainboard failure.

Will the system power up on AC long enough to run a complete diagnostic (F12 at powerup)?

Have you tried a reset (unplug the system, disconnect the battery from the mainboard and hold the power button for 30 sec;  remove and reinstall the memory module(s), reassemble and check again?

looks like the battery is roadkill, so its time for a new one

@ejn63 Thanks for your reply!

I did a complete diagnostic a couple weeks back and just now and it comes out without any failures.

Could it be a BIOS problem?

Haven’t tried your second suggestion yet.

No, it's not a firmware problem -- but if the system will run correctly (in diagnostics) outside of Windows, but not under Windows, the next step is a clean reinstall.
