XPS 15 9560, battery charging, AC power issues

My XPS 15 9560 would randomly charge and refused to run on AC power when plugged in. I've owned my XPS 15 9560 since 2018 and am on my second 130W charger. I brought it to a local tech shop and was told that my laptop should still run on AC power even with its very tired original battery. He even tried a new Dell 130W charger to no avail. Strangely, he tried a 45W charger and it charges the battery but only when the laptop is off. That's my temporary but barely workable solution. The computer tech said that I may have motherboard problems and if so Dell would likely recommend that I replace it, which I'd rather not do. It has been a great laptop. I may buy a new battery, but I'm not convinced that will solve my problems. If anyone has thoughts about a plan of action or interim investigations I should try, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

If the battery is the issue, (and presumably the shop disconnected it to verify that it isn't), the system will power up and run on AC power.  If it's not running on AC only, the mainboard is the issue.

Replacing the mainboard (which as the shop told you is the likely faulty part) will not be inexpensive -- boards run from $350 for an i3 CPU/integrated video to upward of $700 for an i7/discrete GPU), plus the labor to install.

If a new system isn't in the budget, look for a complete, working used system with some sort of a warranty -- it'll be cheaper than repairing this one.

@ejn63 Thank you. The shop didn't remove the battery so that is an unknown. Good to know that I can remove the battery and it will run on AC power as long as the motherboard isn't cooked.

@ejn63 I removed the battery and tried AC power and it ran but was very unhappy. Time for a new laptop.
