XPS 13 9370, fingerprint reader not connected

I’m writing this post in hopes that we can better diagnose finger print reader problems with more details than merely “It does not work.” It appears from some other forum posts that user posted solutions work for some and not others, thus indicating that we are not experiencing the same issues.

My configuration

  • Dell XPS 13 9370
  • I7 8550U
  • 8gb ram
  • 4k monitor
  • 512gb ssd
  • Windows 10 Pro (Version: 10.0.17134 Build: 17134)
  • Bios version: 1.6.3
  • Goodix driver version: 2.1.31.400
  • Intel Software Guard Extensions Platform Software: 1.9.100.41172
  • Bios setting: Intel Software Guard Extension – Intel SGX -> Software
  • Still under warranty

History of device

The device has been serviced by a Dell technician a few times.

  • Initially the power indicator LED to the left of the device not being lit even when fully charged.

Power LED not consistent brightness even at 100% chargedPower LED not consistent brightness even at 100% charged

  • Visit 1: Technician replaced the palm rest and the problem was not resolved.
  • Technician then diagnosed that the plastic spacer on the system board with the LEDs are slightly bent and therefore light was not aligned with the palm rest holes.
  • Another visit needed to be scheduled.
  • Meanwhile, I found that speaker was broken, case not closed properly leaving a gap between the charging light and bottom case, and power button not giving tactile feedback thus the laptop cannot be turned on.

Shortly after technician leaves I notice this gap. Later I learn that it can be fixed by pressing together the two halves.Shortly after technician leaves I notice this gap. Later I learn that it can be fixed by pressing together the two halves.

  • Visit 2: The system board was replaced.
  • Visit 3: Technician replaced speakers.
  • The palm rest is found to have few broken fins on the exhaust/intake under the monitor.

  • Visit 4: Technician replaced the palm rest.
  • After it's done, I test the machine and find that the touch pad did not give tactile click while the screws were on tightly. The technician fixed it by not tightening screws too tightly.
  • Technician was made aware of the problem with finger print reader and was given a number to contact their software department.
  • Calls software department
  • Was told to reinstall windows
  • Reinstalled windows
  • Finger print reader still doesn’t work.

Observations

  • Device manager fails to detect the finger print reader. It says the finger print reader is not connected to computer. See picture

Device Manager does not show fingerprint reader as connectedDevice Manager does not show fingerprint reader as connected

  • I know that it is connected because it sometimes work and when asking the technician about the connector, it appears that it is in properly.
  • On the “Sign-in Options page” the fingerprint login does not appear like some other users. (I do have pin sign-in enabled.)

Another Users problem shows the finger print option under windows helloAnother Users problem shows the finger print option under windows helloMine does not show fingerprint optionMine does not show fingerprint option

  • The fingerprint works intermittently. Sometimes it does not work even when I shutdown and turn on via power button. Sometimes it fail to work after it goes into deep sleep. There is no message saying fingerprint is not recognized. Likely due to device manager simply do not detect that a finger print is plugged in.
  • The Goodix Finger print reader driver cannot be reinstalled since it returns a finger print reader cannot be detected. The solution of uninstalling the Goodix driver, install Intel Software Guard Extensions Platform Software and then reinstall Goodix driver has not been attempted since it may be impossible to reinstall with device manager not detecting the fingerprint reader.
  • Cannot install Goodix driver as fingerprint device not detectedCannot install Goodix driver as fingerprint device not detected
  • If I remember correctly, Dell SupportAssist has the capabilities to test the finger print reader individually, but that option disappears when the finger print reader cannot be detected to be installed.

No option of testing finger print reader right now since finger print reader is not detected to be connected. No option of testing finger print reader right now since finger print reader is not detected to be connected.

Speculation/ Theory

I speculate it may be similar to the way iPhone Touch ID stops working with home button replacement. Certain verification between the fingerprint sensor and the system board's chips may fail as my system board has been replaced. I cannot explain why it works sometimes and does not at other times.

The most relevant troubleshooting link I can find which lists replacement of motherboard as a potential issue is here but it is not updated to describe any fix associated with the newer model of laptops. To quote the link. “If any hardware components are installed/swapped/removed (including Motherboard, Fringerprint Reader, Bios Battery), software changed, drivers re-installed, BIOS reset, then Fingerprint data can be affected and this can all be rectified in troubleshooting with no hardware required”

“A good fix for fingerprint reader issues is to always re-flash the Control Vault.”
However, I do not believe that the XPS 13 9370 uses control vault nor control point nor Dell Data Protection|Security Tools since these drivers cannot be found under the driver tab of 9370.

In the installation guide for finger print reader it states that it uses Dell Data Protection|Security Tools (DDP|ST) but the data protection in question cannot be found on 9370’s driver page.
I think the problem at hand may be similar to the troubleshooting guide above but I do not understand the exact security mechanism for the 9370. A system similar to Control Vault/ Control Point/ DDP|ST may need to be reinstalled with a new system board but I cannot find the relevant drivers.

I hope some of you who understands the requirement/ mechanism of Windows Hello can assist with fixing the finger print reader rather than a series of copy and paste links which aren’t directly relevant to the 9370. I do believe that a system similar to Control Vault need to be re-flashed but I don’t know what system is used on 9370. Will clearing TPM fix the problem? Is the TPM chip located on system board?

Higgsinos. Click the link below for resolving the fingerprint reader not working. Fingerprint reader does not work on XPS 9370, XPS 9570 or Precision 5530 https://dell.to/2FWR5N6

Thanks for the reply. I've tried the solution posted, but it did not resolve the issue, which not unexpected as the link states:

"The fingerprint reader for the XPS 9370, XPS 9570 or Precision 5530 may not function correctly in Windows, but Device manager can detect the fingerprint reader device correctly"

Device manager cannot detect my fingerprint reader correctly which is partly the issue i'm trying to solve.

Thanks

I am also having this issue. Intermittently the fingerprint reader will not function. I have had the motherboard replaced, but I can't say if it occurred before then. What I can say is that it primarily stops after going to sleep (closing the lid). Sometimes functionality returns  later after putting it to sleep again, and sometimes not. I will have to check if the Device Manager sees it when it stops working next. And I've tried the Intel SGX thing, but it's already enabled.

I'd be interested to see if it disappears in your device manager too.

If you haven't already, you can see if some of the solutions here works for you. I personally haven't tried uninstalling goodix driver since my finger print reader hasn't worked for a few months now thus can't reinstall it if I uninstall it.

Okay, so I've done some troubleshooting. (LAST EDITED: 18-Feb-2019, 11:12AM EST)

  • Model: Dell Precision 5530
  • Windows 10 Pro, version 1803, build 17134.590
  • Goodix driver 2.1.32.300
  • Have had the motherboard replaced by Dell.

  • Can confirm that the fingerprint reader does not work on a restart or on a cold boot.
  • Can confirm that the fingerprint reader does not disappear in the device manager.
  • Unclear how the fingerprint scanner reacts to sleep mode. Will update if this changes.
  • Fingerprint reader does work sometimes.

Attempted solutions (in order):

  • Updated the Goodix drivers through Device Manager. Unsuccessful.
  • Uninstalled and deleted the the Goodix drivers through the Device Manager. Downloaded a fresh copy of the Intel Software Guard Extensions Platform Software. Ran the software, oddly it did not allow me to just install so I selected "Repair". Then updated the Goodix drivers to the most recent copy through Device Manager. Unsuccessful.
  • Changed the BIOS settings for Software Guard Extensions(SGX) from Enabled to Software Controlled. Unsuccessful. (Changed it back to Enabled afterwards.)
  •  Updated the Goodix drivers by downloading the latest copy from Dell.com. Unsuccessful.
  • I do not appear to have any ControlPoint software on my machine.
  • I got nervous about clearing the TPM since it warned me about losing access to data. If someone from Dell can confirm that this won't cause me to lose access to data on my hard drive, I will attempt that.
  • I do not appear to have anything called "Control Vault" on my system.
  • I do not appear to have anything from Wave Systems Corp. on my machine, nor anything called Wave Data Removal utility.
  • I do not have a Contactless Smart Card Reader to deactivate.
  • I do not appear to have anything called DigitalPersona on my machine.
  • I removed the fingerprint data through the Settings menu, and set it up again. Unsuccessful.

What did we learn here? It is clearly a software problem, as I can setup the fingerprint sensor fine through the Settings menu, which means that the hardware must be functional. Thus, my sense is that there's a setting here that needs changing, or something else is prohibiting use of the fingerprint sensor to log in after a shutdown or restart. This is actually mentioned in that thread, as well, by TomDC on page 2:

"I posted earlier that I was experiencing a problem where the fingerprint reader would not work when rebooting cold or from hibernation, and thought I'd report back.

I discovered that the option to allow windows to stop the fingerprint reader to save battery was checked. I unchecked that box and it now works as it should. I know it worked prior to one of those windows updates, so i'm assuming that update also enabled that option."

Unfortunately, what options this is or where it is is never discussed, and nobody else commented on it.

I believe this covers every recommended solution in the link provided by Higgsinos, which included recommendations from Dell. The only thing left is to System Restore back to a point that didn't have this issue, but I honestly have no idea when that was. Or a complete re-installation of the OS.

I also am pretty sure that this is a different issue than the original one posted, so it's probably best if I start a new thread.

Unrelated, but it sounds like you (Higgsinos) have a bad sensor. You might consider asking Dell to replace just the fingerprint module.

I'm glad you found a solution with the finger print reader going to sleep to save power.

Since you did not have any problem with the fingerprint reader working after having the system board replaced, I suspect it may be a faulty fingerprint reader or a loose cable which causes it to work intermittently.

Looking at the service manual:Finger print reader assembly.jpg

Would the ribbon cable come loose while the laptop is being moved around?

I may contact Dell and see if they can offer a solution or replace the fingerprint sensor.
