Using an EGPU with XPS15 laptop and Dell Docking Station

Hi All!

My company purchased the following laptop - https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/xps-15-laptop/spd/xps-15-9530-laptop/sxn9530120001mauw

Unbeknownst to me the software we want to run on it requires specifically a NVIDIA graphics card to run.

I was wondering if we could utilise a EGPU through our Dell dock (WD19S) to get the software to work?

Any advice on both the practicality of this and the specific NVIDIA card that would work would be greatly appreciated. Minimum GPU requirement for the software is GTX 1080.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It may be possible, subject to some limitations.

First, external GPUs need to be connected to an external monitor (direct connection).  They either won't feed to the internal display, or if one can work this way, the performance will be greatly hindered.

Dell does not support eGPUs, so you're on your own to make one work.  You may want to search for one someone has had success with on this model system.

The eGPU itself will need to be connected directly to the system -- not to a docking station.
