Dell XPS 15 9500 Backlight Bleed Expectations

I know backlight bleed is very common...how much would you consider "acceptable" for a laptop that costs as much as the 9500?  I mostly notice it during the boot/post screen (Dell logo) but when I ran test screens last night, it is definitely there.  This photo was taken at night with all the lights off and camera flash obviously off.  50% screen brightness.  Thoughts...mainly the top left and right, and some areas in the bottom corners?  I know the camera will actually accentuate these things so it isn't "as bad" as the photo shows.  Should I request screen replacement or will most screens exhibit similar?  I do have a ticket open with Dell so I owe an e-mail back today with this picture.Dell XPS 15 9500 Backlight BleedDell XPS 15 9500 Backlight Bleed

Well...after reading a Reddit user say that he was able to get his screen "replaced" via on-site repair visit, and that he allegedly ended up with a screen with no backlight bleed, I just got off the phone with Dell and a technician should be coming out next week to replace the LCD.  If this doesn't fix the issue...I'll still have a few days to decide on options.  After reading a lot of responses...I'm hesitant to just do an exchange because it sounds like just playing the lottery with touchpad, speaker, display, and other issues.  My touchpad has already been fixed so I don't want to risk undoing that repair:)

I'm in the UK, bought in October after a dying laptop crashed and lockdown home-admin and art-making meant I needed a good spec replacement and chose this over a pricier Macbook Pro.. I had my light leak screen replaced shortly after, only to have a new screen with the same issue. I have an area of bleed on the top-left & lower left-side edges (not IPS glow as compared via Reddit etc), a bit less than yours but nonetheless visible and I'm aware of it. I've never owned a screen that shows this before but I also see on other forums issues with this model. The on-site engineer who replaced my screen (it's a whole top unit, not an internal screen that gets removed) suggested it could be a manufacturing batch issue.

However, Dell said that what I now have is 'within product specifications', but for the money spent I'm not quite sure I find that ok.

Dell have said that they can't provide me their data on comparing my photos with the screens on their other models, as they say they have done, so it's now to me to either accept it, risk a replacement being the same (and then no refund is applicable apparently), or return this one to get a refund. I'm trying to compare my screen against other laptops myself, as their tech team say they have done, but due to lockdown it's impossible to do that as shops are closed etc.

I've suggested that I would be happy to wait until a new batch is produced to replace with but this was unfortunately not something they could agree to. So Dell have kindly shelved my case until it is safe enough to do my own research, though given our new lockdown circumstances I'm not sure when I can do that. I do feel like it's a lottery and trust in their technical team's verbal reply is all I currently have to go by. It's also quite a stress on top of all things related to life under COVID restrictions.

I think consumer law says that damaged/faulty products can be replaced as many times as needed. I also read on other forums that new spec model releases in any area of tech, can take some time with early consumers to get feedback to improve them either by software or hardware improvements.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, my replacement was only partially successful and I have reluctantly requested an exchange.  Technician was very busy and didn't arrive until 6 pm...not his fault but definitely not convenient.  It took him longer than expected to do the repair and each time he put the machine back together something didn't work...first it was the camera, then the charging LED, and even when he left the Windows driver for the trackpad was not loading.  The good news was that there wasn't much backlight bleed...a little glow coming from bottom of screen but consistent and not bad.  HOWEVER, even though the screen arrived with plastic protection that was hard for the tech to take off (he even commented that it was taking a lot more force than necessary), as soon as he left I cleaned the screen and used a flashlight to inspect...there was noticeable scratches...two in particular that bugged me.

My fingers are crossed the new one comes without wobbly touchpad or screen backlight bleed.

@mccainmw - familiar nickname. Funny how we meet across different threads to discuss our new XPS issues.`

Here is how mine is looking, definitely can see the light bleed when watching videos. Due to the 16:10 aspect ratio the top and bottom always remain black and keeping the bleed areas exposed.

hello.

after other problems with my 9500, I`ve seen that I have this issue also. but mine is more obvious. Now I`m forced to go to service and try to replace my unit because is faulty.b68b0795-9f03-4528-b837-f879617484a5 (002).jpg
