Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) missing

Hi Michael,

If you receive Windows Update error 80246008 while downloading updates, you might need to change the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) or Windows Event Log service settings, and then restart each service.

Firstly I would like you to run the Microsoft fixit for Windows update. Please download and run Fix it from the link below.

support.microsoft.com/.../windows_update

If this doesn’t solve the issue you can manually restart the BITS service by doing the following steps.

• Click on start and type in “services.msc” in the search bar.

• Under services check whether the following services are started.

                         1.COM+ Event System :Automatic

                         2.Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

• If you have any other settings you have to correct it.

• If COM+ Event System is not started then please run it manually, next run manually BITS service.

Thanks for your reply.  COM+ Event System is set to Automatic and is Started.  However BITS is missing from my list

This issue occurs due to certain errors in the registry files and may be rectified by downloading and running the BITS repair tool from the link below:

www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

However, there may be certain complications as sometimes it displays a message "(BITS) repair is not required currently"

The other option is to reset the system to the factory default settings and that should definitely resolve the issue.

Note: Please make sure you have all the important data backed up as restoring the system to factory defaults would result in data loss.

To restore the system to the factory default settings follow the steps listed below:

1. Shut down the computer.

2. Turn on the computer and start pressing the “F8” Key on the first Dell logo. Keep on pressing the “F8” key on first Dell screen until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.

3. Highlight "Repair Your Computer" and hit enter.

4. Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next

5. Enter your Password and click ok.

6. At the ‘Choose a Recover Tool’ window, select ‘Dell Data Safe Restore and Emergency Backup’ and continue with PC restore.

I'd like to do it without setting the system to the factory default settings.  I already tried to run the BITS repair tool but it said that I had to validate windows on my computer.  When I tried to run the Genuine Windows Validation program it said that it is no longer supported.

I also have the exact same issue on my relatively new Dell running Windows 7. I cannot do the windows updates and get the same error as Michael. The Background Intelligence Transfer (BITS) is NOT in my services list, all the others you mentioned are there and started. I do not want to restore my system for what I believe is one missing file or set of files. I tried to get the BITS Repair Tool previously mentioned for Windows 7, it didnt appear to be available. I just need to install the BITS services. Can someone please help.

There are a handful of ways to fits the Bits service but what does not "currently" work is to visit this page.

In order to download and use the tool DIRECT from Microsoft to fix Bits, you must first run their validation tool.

As of today, they hgive you the WRONG TOOL.

When you run it, it will tell you to go get another one since it's old and out of date...so no way to fix it or troubleshoot it from there although its their fault.

The same thing happened to me on the Powershell and Bits page although I don't have that link handy.

It's no wonder the Microsoft haters gain more traction every day.

To rectify a missing Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) in Windows 7 64-bit, it is suggested to follow these steps:

Please Note: Users of Windows Vista 32-bit operating systems are encouraged to follow these steps as closely as they can.

1. Go to the following SevenForums article by copying the following URL and pasting it into your web browser's address bar and then pushing Enter on your keyboard:

2. Scroll down the page to the third green colored heading or sentence, about halfway down the page.

3. Download the BITSWin7.reg registration files by clicking on the download button underneath the green colored heading or sentence and choosing Save As. Choose a destination for the files to be downloaded to and remember where that destination is.

4. Click Start and type regedit in the search bar. Wait for regedit to appear and when it does, click on it. Click Yes in the Notification Dialog Box. When the Microsoft Windows Registry Editor opens, click File and then Import. Import the BITSWin7 registration entries into your Windows registry by locating the file on your computer, clicking on it and then clicking Open. If successful, Click Ok to the dialog box that appears.

5. Restart the computer.

6. After the computer has restarted, click Start and type services.msc in the search bar. Click on services.

7. Locate the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on the list and click on it once to highlight it. Click Properties on the tool bar under View. Click the General tab. Ensure that the startup type is set for Automatic (Delayed Start) and check to see if the program has started. If it has stopped, click Start and follow any prompts that may appear then click Apply/Ok.

8. The Background Intelligent Transfer Service should now be reinstated.
