VxRAIL and existing ESXi host

Hi there ...

I have customer thinking about getting VxRAIL ..

They want to know if they can put under VxRAIL vCenter management so that they cab use vMotion for Data migration .

( in Vspex Blue ... this was not supported )

Would this be same still ?

Also if it is supported ( or not supported ) please advise me for the document ( or any web site ...)

thanks !

Aya,

You cannot put what we would call a "foreign" node into the cluster (vCenter or VSAN) when we are running our own instance of vCenter.  You would need to wait for the 3.5 version and use an external vCenter for that.  Definitely not supported.

Question

Can user put old ( existing ESXi server ) ESXi server under VxRAIL vCenter server so that they can migrate data via vMotion .( this would be easy .)

if anybody know ... please let me know .

The Q2 3.5 software update will support connecting VxRail to an external vCenter instance and you can do a cross vCenter migration then.  Note that you need to be at vCenter 6.0.

hi Collin!

Thanks heaps for your reply ! it is  great that to know we can use vCenter for migration! ( vCenter to vCenter )

BTW , Can customer add  existing ESXi server(Not from VSPEX Blue , this is just normal HP ESXi server )  to vCenter ( under VxRail management ) ? Event existing ESXi Server is 5.5 .... .

Would this be supported ? ( Customer , inc me think this can be done but not sure this is supported or not ....)

We have deployed a VXRAIL 3.5, we also have older VSPEX Blue (which is using external Vcenter), please suggest how can we migrate. The VSAN for any of them will belong to them only, how the storage vmotion will work?

Please give any inputs or links where this have been mentioned. Customer also has different VMware environment, how that can be migrated, considering storage is not common?

Will powering off VM allow to migrate it across? Or V2V is the only option?

Please help

Assuming all esxi clusters and the vcenter are at vsphere 6.x and the minimum requirements are met, you can do cross cluster vmotion/storage vmotion operations to move VM's from one cluster to the other that is managed by the same vcenter or even by a separate vcenter where each cluster does not have shared storage between the two. This is done by doing a vmotion and storage vmotion at the same time for that vm, thus migrating the vm state and its storage to another host and another datastore. in this case it would be moving a vm from a vspex blue  hosts/vsan datastore to a vxrail host/vsan datastore.

Details on these migration options can be found here:

vSphere 6.0 Documentation Center - details

vSphere 6.0 Documentation Center   - requirements

You could also power off the VM's and do a cold migration as well. Please refer to the vsphere documentation on steps and requirements to do that.
