Stop Automated vMotion Migration from VxRail to VxRail

I am running a 5 node VxRail cluster. I have found that VxRail Manager, PSC, and Vcenter Appliance are getting migrated from node01 to other nodes.

Is there a way to prevent these VMs migration. I want to do this assist in cluster shutdowns during power outages or other instances that require a full shutdown.

Hello Mediocre at Best,

Which VxRail systems do you have?

You could setup host groups and affinity rules, to keep the VMs on node1.  With that being said, it's OK that they move around the cluster, that will make sure that you have them available at all times.

Hello Sam-L ,

I am currently have a cluster of 5 VxRail E560Fs.

On a similar note is it necessary to put them into Maintenance mode before shutdown?

Hello Jeremy,

I mainly want this for shutting down purposes since the VMs aren't migrating back to node one as i shut down the cluster. Instead they are staying say on Node 4 and when it shutdown i lose access to Vcenter, which is what i am trying to prevent.

I know you can access place the servers into Maintenance mode and that will migrate the VMs but once you get down to the last one or two it can't handle the VMs. I am also aware that one can shut them down via the DRACs or ESXI webui; however, there will be times when i/one of my team are not there to conduct the shutdown. In that instance I will have "untrained" personal or personal unfamiliar with the system conducting the shutdown so i want to make the shutdown SOP as simple as possible.

Thanks for the additional info on that. Have you looked at the cluster shutdown functionality provided by VxRail MGR?  As part of that shutdown, it will move the system/service VMs (VxRail MGR, VCSA, PSC) back  to Node 1 before it starts powering down the nodes.  This can also be executed via an API call if needed.
