Microsoft Defender AV can be used to download malicious files?

An interesting analysis by Forbes, on a report by Bleeping Computer:

"Earlier this week, the always informative Bleeping Computer reported that an update to Microsoft Defender Antivirus for Windows 10 users meant it could itself be used to download malware files. So, just how problematic is this and does it mean that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is now a security risk itself?"

But they also say MD will spot the downloaded malware and block it.  So is somebody making more out of this than there is...?

It is also pointed out that the malware would need to access User Account Control (assuming it is not disabled).

I think as a threat, it's a tempest in a teapot.
