Converting a single disk to a RAID 1 on S150 controller

Hi all,

Is it possible to convert a single disk to a RAID 1 on R250 server with S150 controller?

This server will be delivered to us next week with only one disk and the second disk will be delivered next month so I don't want to wait to install server. So I would like to start with one disk and after second disk's arrival I would like to change disk configuration to Raid 1.

On this discussion(https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/poweredge-hddscsiraid/perc-h730-new-raid-1-based-on-one-existing-disk/64f574b614461a13afaaaa14) I read that this is possible for H730 controller but I'm not sure if I can do this on S150 controller.

Hi,

No, unfortunately, converting a single disk to RAID 1 on the PERC S150 controller isn't possible. You'll need to create the RAID array during the initial setup. RAID 1, requires a minimum of two identical disks to function. While it's great that you're getting the new R250 server, creating a RAID 1 with just one disk isn't an option on the S150 controller. For RAID 1, you need to have two disks from the start

Hope that helps!

@DELL-Erman O Thank you very much for your reply.

One more question, the following controllers are also supported on R250: PERC H345, H755, HBA355i. Any of these controller is capable of converting a single disk to Raid1?

Tere4,

As Erman pointed out, a raid 1 requires a minimum of 2 drives to create, the only option for a single stand-alone drive would be a Raid 0.

Hello,

Thank you for the information. I understand that Raid 1 on S150 controller requires 2 drives to create. But as I mentioned before, on this discussion(https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/poweredge-hddscsiraid/perc-h730-new-raid-1-based-on-one-existing-disk/64f574b614461a13afaaaa14) I read that converting a single disk to RAID1 is possible for H730 controller. For R250 server H345, H755 and HBA355i controllers are supported. So what I would like to learn, is converting a single disk to RAID1 supported on any of these H345, H755 and HBA355i controllers?

Hello,
I'm not sure this can be done. I also mentioned in the thread you mentioned that RAID 1 requires at least two disks. Frankly, I have not seen any practical example of this being achieved with a single disk. As far as I understand, another user who added the information that RAID1 can be done with a single disk in the relevant thread seems to have used the AI generative answer. That's why I think it may have caused a misunderstanding.
