Solutions Enabler is the command line for Symmetrix. It uses the symapi to communicate with the array. Symapi is a proprietary protocol. SMI-S on the other hand is an industry standard protocol and method of array management (storage provisioning). EMC arrays support SMI-S for array management.

The SMI-S provider is supplied with Solutions Enabler and can therefore be used by third party applications for Symmetrix array management. ViPR Controller for example uses the SMI-S provider to provision storage on Symmetrix and VNX block arrays.

Arrays may have features over and above what is defined in the SMI-S standard. In order to leverage some of the advanced functions of the Symmetrix array, the CLI or Unishphere is required. For Example, day-to-day storage provisioning and local replication are written into SMI-S. If you want to exploit cache partitioning or manage QOS / priority controls on the array, these advanced features are not available as SMI-S functions (yet).

Hi Kushaal,

Some storage management tools use the base Solutions Enabler functionality to discover and manage EMC arrays, while other tools use the SMI-S Provider component of Solutions Enabler to manage EMC arrays.  ProSphere and Storage Configuration Advisor are examples of tools that use the SMI-S Provider component of Solutions Enabler to discover VMAX and VNX arrays.  Watch4net and ControlCenter are examples of tools that use base Solutions Enabler functionality to discover VMAX arrays (and NaviCLI to discovery VNX arrays).May this would help you to understand.
