Uninstall SupportAssist and use only Dell Update.

We have been having ongoing problems with SupportAssist since updating from Version 3.14 to 4.0.0 then to 4.0.1.57784 and have decided to cut our losses with this program. I plan to uninstall the SupportAssist application but leave everything else in place - Remediation, Plug In etc as the machines are still in Warranty.

We have been using Dell Update to check for driver updates and this program works without problem. Can someone confirm that Dell Update will still work if SupportAssist is not installed? I would doubt if Dell Update needs SupportAssist to function but wanted to be sure before I go ahead. Thanks.

Hi @Mitch1924 :

I removed all SupportAssist-related software from my Inspiron 5584 about a year ago, including SupportAssist v3.x and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.x (see my 04-Apr-2024 post today in ex-jedi's Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying for more information) and Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x runs without any issues.

Just note that the Dell Client Management Service (shown below) is a shared service that is used by both SupportAssist and Dell Update.  If you uninstall SupportAssist and this service is accidentally removed then Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x won't run correctly.  However, this can be easily fixed by reinstalling  Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x.

If you want to continue using Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.5.x  (also known as Dell SupportAssist Remediation or System Repair) I assume this software would still run correctly after SupportAssist is removed as long as the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.x is installed, but I've never tested this myself so someone else will have to confirm this is correct.

Hi Imacri and thanks for your very helpful reply. The PC's are still under warranty so I can't really remove all of SupportAssist's tentacles, but will just uninstall the application. Hopefully the uninstall won't affect Dell Update but if so I'll uninstall/reinstall Dell Update. I'm not planning on using System Repair/ OS Recovery as I use a System Image backup program which has never let me down. Thanks again for your help.

Hi @Mitch1924 :

Just FYI, there's a way you can test yourself without actually uninstalling SupportAssist.  Temporarily change the Startup Type of the Dell SupportAssist and Dell TechHub services to Disabled and re-boot to disable SupportAssist.  Then launch Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x to confirm this app still runs normally.

______________________________________________

Before uninstalling all my SupportAssist-related software in March 2023 I disabled the Dell SupportAssist, Dell TechHub (added to SupportAssist v3.11.4 in June 2022 to replace the old Dell Hardware Scan service) and Dell SupportAssist Remediation services and rebooted to temporarily disable Support Assist v3.x and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.5.x (a.k.a. Dell SupportAssist Remediation). The image below was captured back in Dec 2022 a few months before I uninstalled all my SupportAssist-related software.  Note the the Dell Data Vault (DDV) services shown below are also part of Support SupportAssist, but I didn't bother disabling those services because they consumed little to no RAM and CPU when SupportAssist was disabled this way.

As long as I left the shared Dell Client Management Service running I had no problem running Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x while Support Assist v3.x and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.5.x were disabled this way, which gave me confidence that permanently uninstalling my all SupportAssist-related software would not impact Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x.
