SupportAssist messages to update BIOS again and again ...

PC: Dell Optiplex 3080 desktop, BIOS Update to v. 2.110 (or v. 2.11.0?)

Hello I have updated the BIOS with this version (v. 2.110) several times but the SupportAssist application urges me to install the same version again and again ...

Do you have any idea what might happen?

Note that, after the update, I see in the system information (Windows 11) as the installed version 2.11.0,

while SupportAssist mentions it as version 2.110!

You say the problem is due to that?

Thank you in advance

The problem was fixed, without doing anything!

Obviously, dell fixed it.

Thank you

Thank you very much

Hi DimitrisP:

I don't know if your issue is related, but TheMoreILearnTheLessIKnow posted yesterday (19-May-2022) in Dell Update Services Down? about a similar issue where BIOS updates are repeatedly failing on three different computers. TheMoreILearnTheLessIKnow is using Dell Update instead of SupportAssist, but they did not specify the Windows OS or Dell computer model of those three problem computers.

I'd agree that the version number for the latest Dell OptiPlex 3080 System BIOS v2.11.0 released 11-May-2022 looks odd in the detailed release notes <here> (i.e., v2.110, 2.11.0 instead of v2.11.0, 2.11.0) but the name of the standalone offline installer (OptiPlex_3080_2.11.0.exe) looks correct.

Thanks for your reply.

But, I do not mean failure of the update.

The update is successful.

My SupportAssist application just asks to reinstall the same update ...

Hi DimitrisP / ADRGO:

Does your System Information panel show that the Dell OptiPlex 3080 System BIOS v2.11.0 (rel. 11-May-2022) is installed on your system? To find your current BIOS version go to Start | Windows Administrative Tools | System Information [or open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter msinfo32] and scroll down to the “BIOS Version/Date” field.

Good question. The BIOS Version/Date is 2.11.0 4/9/2022. The wrong date concerns me and with Dell Update still saying the 3080 needs to update the BIOS, I am concerned the system may become unstable. Thoughts?

Hi ADRGO:

Don't worry about the discrepancy in BIOS dates. That "4/9/2022" date in your System Information is likely the date/time stamp of the software developer's last revision, not the date the update was  officially posted on the Dell servers and available for download. The release notes <here> for the latest Inspiron 5583/5584 System BIOS v1.18.0 for my Inspiron 5584 say this firmware was released on 13-Apr-2022 but System Information reports my BIOS v1.18.0 is dated 18-Mar-2022.

Win 10 Pro v21H2 System Information BIOS Date Version v1_18_0 22 May 2022.png

If your BIOS version number is correct in System Information then this repeated offering of BIOS v2.11.0 is likely just an odd glitch in SupportAssist and I don't think you should be concerned that your system will become unstable. I noticed an odd glitch a few months ago where my Dell Update utility was incorrectly interpreting the release date "1/7/22" of one of my available updates as 01-Jul-2022 instead of 07-Jan-2022 (see the images in my Feb 2022 thread Any Problems Installing SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.1.16141?) and it's always possible that SupportAssist is confused about the month the OptiPlex 3080 BIOS v2.11.0 was released as well.

What Windows OS are you running (please include the version and build shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications) and what SupportAssist version is shown at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features? Do you use data encryption software like Dell Encryption v11.4.x or Windows' built-in BitLocker drive encryption (Control Panel | System and Security | BitLocker Drive Encryption)? If you have installed the Dell Command | Update Windows Universal Application v4.5.0 listed <here> on the OptiPlex support page does this utility still detect BIOS v2.11.0 as an available update? I have no idea why both you and the OP DimitrisP are having the same issue where SupportAssist is unable to detect that BIOS v2.11.0 is already installed, although it might have something to do with the odd version numbering (i.e., v211.0 vs v2.11.0) that DimitrisP mentioned in their original post, but also I noticed that DimitrisP has a Win 11 OS and that might have something to do with the problem.

Just an aside, but I should also note that many users in this forum do not recommend using a Dell utility like SupportAssist or Dell Update to install BIOS updates just in case the update fails to run to completion. Some users have even reported that their system would not boot up after SupportAssist updated their BIOS and they had to downgrade their BIOS before they could boot up their system.

If SupportAssist or Dell Update finds an available BIOS update for my Inspiron 5584 I normally download the .exe installer from the Driver & Downloads tab of my Inspiron 5584 support page and save it to my desktop, and then right-click and choose "Run as Administrator" to allow Windows to install the update. Other Dell users believe this method is still too risky and flash their BIOS from the from BIOS Boot Menu using a removable USB thumb drive. Detailed instructions for updating the BIOS from Windows or the BIOS Boot Menu are posted in the "Installation Instructions" section of the release notes (driver details) for every BIOS update listed on the support page for your Dell computer model, including the release notes <here> for the Dell OptiPlex 3080 System BIOS v2.11.0.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I used Dell Update (v4.5) to install the BIOS, the history shows BIOS (2.110) was installed, however, still shows BIOS 2.11.0 (2.110) as pending critical update. Running Windows 10 21H2. The SupportAssist version is 3.10.4.18. We will wait for Dell to resolve the anomaly.

Supportassist saves the information of system drivers in a config file somewhere in Program Data folders.

Uninstall SupportAssist

C:/ Program Data/ PCDR
C:/ Program Data/Supportassist
C:/ Program Data/Dell/Dell data volt
C:/ Program Files/ Dell/Supportassist
C:/ Program Files/ Dell/ Dell data Volt

Once done reboot and install SA again.

Hi DimitrisP:

Glad to hear your OptiPlex 3080 BIOS finally updated to v2.11.0.

I don't know if it's relevant, but I noticed that the detailed release notes <here> for the Dell OptiPlex 3080 System BIOS v2.11.0 now correctly lists the version number as 2.11.0, 2.11.0 (i.e., not v2.110, 2.11.0).  Perhaps there was a glitch with the online installer that had to be fixed as well.
