How to stop Dell Command | Update from auto-running in background

I'm running Dell Update v 4.7.1 under Windows 10.  Lately it's started notifying me (via Windows Notifications) of the availability of updates.  It does this several times a day, since I put my computer in Standby when I'm not using it!  I've finally had to turn off its ability to send Notifications.

I'd rather that it *never* ran in the background.  I'd like Dell Update to run only when I launch it, which I occasionally do to see what's available and whether I want the update(s).

Can someone tell me how to disable the automatic running of Dell Update in the background?  I can't find anything in the Windows scheduler for it, for example.

Thank you.

Hi Another Poor Slob:

See the section titled "Update Settings" in the Dell Command | Update Version 4.x User's Guide. Is there a check box at Settings | Update Settings | Automatically Check for Updates | Check For Updates that you can disable to stop automatic background updating?

I use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 on my Inspiron 5584, which cannot run automatic checks for updates. However, the update setting described for Dell Command | Update v4.7.1 in that user guide sounds similar to the setting I have in SupportAssist v3.13.0.126 at Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations (see image below).

On the Settings screen, click Update Settings. Under Automatically check for updates > Check for updates, select one of the following: Manual Updates Only— If you select this option, Dell Command | Update does not run scheduled updates and all the other fields on this page are hidden.

When I invoke Dell Command | Update v 4.7.1, on my Windows 10 Dell Inspiron laptop, there is no Settings button in its title bar (as described in the user guide you helpfully pointed me too).  This is so even if I run it as administrator.

The only clickable things in the title bar are the Windows standard close/minimize/maximize buttons.

It seems that my Dell Command | Update only wants to allow me to "Check Updates" (or look at system info/licensing).  Nothing else.

Hi Another Poor Slob:

Sorry, you might have to wait for someone using Dell Command | Update to help you with this.

In the mean time please let us know your Dell Inspiron model number, details about your Windows 10 OS (please include the edition, version and OS build number shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications), and if are you still on Dell Command | Update v4.7.1. The Dell Update | Command documentation page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/command-update/docs shows that a new version of Dell Command | Update was released today (31-Jan-2022) and the version 4.8.0 release notes <here> say it includes "Upgraded toast notifications to reconcile reboot cycles" so perhaps an update to v4.8.0 will at least fix your constant notifications.

I found the image below for an older Dell Command | Update v4.4.0 in the Catapult article Running the Dell Command Update that suggests that you should have a Settings icon (i.e., a gear-shaped icon just to the left of the minimize / maximize buttons that opens your settings when clicked.  If you're missing that icon then perhaps an uninstall / reinstall of Dell Command | Update will fix the problem.

As previously noted, I use the recommended Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 on my Inspiron 5584 and I do not have that gear-shaped icon in the interface because my edition of Dell Update does not run automatically in the background and does not have customizable settings.  From my Inspiron 5584:

If you are certain that you've installed the correct Dell Command | Update version recommended on the Drivers and Downloads page for your Dell computer model (go to https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us?app=products and enter your unique Service Tag to find the correct support page for your computer model) then please note that I had an odd problem a few years ago where my Dell Update v3.1.0 would repeatedly show a pop-up notification for Dell Update stating "The system has been updated" after every system re-boot, even if an update was not installed. I was able to stop these false notifications at Settings | System | Notifications & Actions | Get Notifications From These Senders, and a few weeks later a bug fix was included in Dell Update v3.1.1 - see my 01-Mar-2020 post on page 12 of markwny153's Notification from Dell Update: The System Has Been Updated.

Hi,

try run Dell Command | Update as administrator (click right on Dell Command | Update - Next - Run as administrator).

Only in that way it let me change Setting from Automatic to manual update in application. Update version 5.2.0.

Regards

Radek
