Adding real Fan to DELL Precision T5820

I have a DELL Precision T5820 and I want to add an exhaust fan at the back to improve the cooling for the system. I'm using a Xeon W2145, and it has issues with Limit Throttling, so I'm trying to improve its cooling. How can I add a rear exhaust fan to it?

I've seen some people use HD fan headers to connect the fan, but the problem is it always runs at full speed.

Does anyone have experience with adding an exhaust fan to this system? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

This is a picture I found of someone who installed it on his T5820.

The rear fan in picture was from Precision tower 7820.  Search for Dell part number 0YG3N1.

@Chino de Oro

Sorry for mistakenly writing 'real fan' instead of 'rear fan'. I replaced the CPU cooler and used a Noctua Fan as the rear fan instead of buying Precision tower 7820 rear fan. I used an HD Fan Headers and didn't encounter any issues with fan error warnings or running at full speed. When testing with Cinebench R23, it significantly improved the Limit Throttling issue.

It’s worth the $100 investment to improve the overheating and Limit Throttling issues.

Dell should have sold their products with cooling systems that can work more efficiently on high-performance CPUs. I have a Dell OptiPlex 7070 MFF with an i7 8700, and it has similar issues with overheating and Limit Throttling. But unfortunately, there's no way for me to improve its cooling performance.

External fan might help on the Optiplex 7070 if feasible.

On your Precision, there is option to increase fan speed in BIOS settings for both CPU and GPU.  While it could be audible, set the base speed to 20 - 25% can keep the CPU running cool.

@Chino de Oro It will be quite noisy if I set it at 25%. Adding another heatsink helps maintain performance while keeping the noise at an acceptable level. Previously, I set it at 15% and experienced Limit Throttling very frequently. Thank you for your information.

@bradthetechnut I have switched to using that PC as a NAS. However, with an i7 8700 & 32GB RAM configuration for a NAS, it might be overkill. I like the design of the Dell 7070, but I should probably use the i7 8700T or 9700T with a 30W TDP rather than the 8700 with a 65W TDP. I have looked for many ways to improve the thermal capacity and upgrade the CPU heatsink, but it seems impossible. Thank you for your information and suggestions.

Heat issues seem to be quite common in the micros.

This thread query for rear fan addition and hence, the part number for the fan was suggested.  While replacing the CPU cooler did helped with the CPU throttled issue, customize the fan speed could provide solution without additional cost.

Instead of asking for rear fan addition, you could change this thread query and share your CPU cooler replacement with information on the parts used, even pictures would be helpful to users following the topic.

If you have question or something to share with your OptiPlex, you can create another thread in OptiPlex board to get proper attention.

Read your link.  Good share.  About inserting picture, it would be the same as you did on this thread.  Second icon on second row, click on browse files and point to your prepared pictures.

On a side note, the 5820 also can be outfitted with Core-X series processors (different boards), which could yield higher operating temps and higher core clocks in comparison to Xeon W.

@Chino de Oro

Thank you for your information. I did exactly that and tried editing it many times, but the image still does not display. On the website where I wrote the article, the image I inserted was visible before posting, but after submitting the article, the image disappeared.

I use a Xeon W-2145, so with Core-X series CPUs that have a higher TDP, I'm not sure if it will be as effective as on my machine. That's why I clearly specified my computer's configuration in the article.

I uploaded this image to another website and inserted the image link.

Sorry if I may have caused any confusion.  I only pointed out the upload process and did not mean to discount your issue.  Others have been reporting about the pictures upload issue as well.

About the Core-X series processors, they use a different motherboard and chipset.  You can not swap out a Xeon CPU for a Core-X CPU on the same board.

I used both, i9 Core-X 10th series and Xeon W-2295.  They are both identical in performance and did not have thermal issue while underload with stock fans and cooler.

@Chino de Oro I am also not sure why I and a few others are experiencing overheating and Limit Throttling issues. It might depend on the version of the motherboard and BIOS. Previously, when I used this computer to run Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, and SQL Server, I didn't notice this problem. It could be because using those applications doesn't make the computer run continuously at high performance for a long time. Recently, when I tried running a few applications using LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory), a type of recurrent neural network (RNN), to train AI, I discovered the issue. But in the end, I was very happy to find a solution to the problem.

@bradthetechnut

Now I understand why I couldn't post images. Thank you for letting me know!
