Remove physical disk from H730P RAID10 virtual disk
I have an R640 server with an H730P RAID controller.
I started with 6x 480 GB disks in a single RAID10 virtual disk.
I added 2x 2000 GB disks and reconfigured the virtual disk to include them, but I see only 480 GB on each disk is being used.
I have not changed the disk partitions to use the additional space.
Is there a way I can remove the 2x 2000 GB disks from the virtual disk?
I am using the web based Server Administrator. The Reconfigure task now returns the following errors for the virtual disk:
Not enough physical disk space.
The virtual disk has reached the maximum number of physical disks supported.

Tim_s_uk,
I wouldn't recommend trying to reconfigure the virtual disk back, as I don't believe it is supported to do so as it likely will cause instability to the OS, as well as I don't see if as a supported function of the controller. I believe the supported process for this instance would be to get a complete backup, delete and then recreate the virtual disk with the drives you want, then reinstall the OS and restore from backup. Now i will continue researching the issue to see if it is possible to do, but again I don't believe it will be a supported process to do.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply. I thought that might be the case.
There are two remaining slots, so my current plan is to install one or two more physical disks to create a second virtual disk, copy the data from the original virtual disk to the new one, recreate the original virtual disk with fewer physical disks and copy the data back. I should then be back to what I had originally - 6 physical disks with 4 spare slots.
I can then add the two new disks again, but create a separate virtual disk instead of adding them to the existing RAID10 array.
If you do find a way to remove the physical disks from the existing array that would save me some time.
Thanks,
Tim

Hi,
I gave the H730P user guide a check on VD reconfigure if the drives can be separated as you mentioned, it isn't possible, unfortunately. https://dell.to/3XOyry6
I can't think of any other solution than you and Chris mentioned.
