Dell 1950 III Hangs after F/W initializing devices 100%

Good morning everyone,

Could someone help me with ideas about this issue?

After turn on my dell poweredge 1950 III it gets stuck at F/W initializing devices 100%. I tried to press CTRL+R but it did not go to any BIOS options. I tried F2, nothing. I disconnected network cards, hard drives and still the same. Only after I disconnected the PERC 5i the server pass to the BIOS options. Any ideas? The server was working before (until the last time that it was turned off). The server was off for 2 or 3 months but It does not show any battery errors. Do I need to buy another PERC?

Hi there,

Seems that you have done great troubleshooting leading it to the PERC card issue. Curious, do you have any other 1950s to try the card with?

The issue can lead from the riser which the card is seated.

Sometimes, reseating the card can resolve the issue. So might need to troubleshoot more towards that area. The PERC should have a DIMM, give it a clean up - by using the "eraser" trick.

Other than that, with no luck, you will need to replace the PERC card.

Thanks. I already tried that. But not luck. Is the PERC could be affected by leaving the server off 2 or 3 months? About battery, I assume should be fine because the time is still ok.

Hi,

Not only the PERC card can be affected, even the smallest component, eg: DIMM or Power Supply can be affected.

Of the battery, it's not the BIOS battery that I am refering to, but it's the PERC BTRY.

Hi,

Thanks guys for the quick response. After I removed the DIMM it let me pass to the F2 option. However, I think the best option it is to buy another server. Well, I have a friend who has an old DELL 2950 and I am going to use it to test the other one replacing part by part.

Thanks,

Hi there,

That would be some good news, is data in the server important? If not, I might suggest to try updating the firmware of PERC. You might need to boot into BIOS for the update. Worth trying.

Thanks, I will try that. However, I can only access to the BIOS if I remove the DIMM from the PERC. So, I will remove that and then update the firmware of the PERC and then turn off, put the DIMM back in and then turn on?

Hi there,

Truthfully, I have not tried before updating the firmware without the DIMM on the PERC. By looking at the architecture, DIMM is for ROM on data access to/from the PERC.

Might give it a try on updating the firmware without the DIMM, worth try and might save some $$$.

Hi Joey,

I am going to try this weekend. If I live the memory connected the server will get hang at :                            F/W Initializing Devices 100% and CTRL+R or F2 wont work. If I remove the memory, I will get a warning but I can get access to F2 options. Anyway, I will try and I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks,
