R610 + 502W PSU capacity

Hope someone can answer ( I'm sure you can ).

R610 with 2x 502 W PSU ( 1 duty, 1 standby of course), iDRAC enterprise, PERCi6,

2x X5670@2.93GHz

5x HDD spinning

1x SSD

1x HDD in the DVD bay

120 Gb memory.

System has downgraded performance due to power exceeds supply. This has started when I added 6x16 Gb sticks. ( in the white slots, and 4Gb in the black slots. All slots occupied now ) System reports 120 Gb, so configuration OK. BIOS set to 1033 MHz, Optomized, but during POST, reports 800 due to power restraint.

So question 1- is the 502W PSU too small, and would 717W solve the issue. OR have I missed a setting in BIOS somewhere, perhaps in the power settings ?

Question 2 - there is a setting in BIOS to enable memory config during boot. Can this be disabled or does it have to always be done during boot. ( I think the answer may be it only needs to be done if there has been a change in memory amount/config, but it would be good to have expert advice on this.

Hello Dennis,

Check if you have CSIOR enabled.  Access iDRAC BIOS (CTRL+E when DRAC initializes during post) and Enable Collect System Inventory on Restart.

[CTRL+E]iDRAC Configuration Utility

System Services>

System Services - Enabled

Cancel System Service - No

Collect System Inventory on Restart - Enabled

If you put the original PSUs in does it change the reporting?

Hello DennisW,

If the Power required exceeds PSU wattage then you should check your memory and expansion card population rules. I've linked the owner's manual below.

I would check first you have the BIOS and iDRAC firmware up to date.

Does the memory happen to be quad ranked?  For quad-rank memory modules:

Two memory modules per channel are limited to 800 MHz, regardless of memory module speed

Page 116 for memory population rules

Page 90 - check expansion slots rules

Owners Manual :  https://dell.to/3y0UwKP

You may get some relief with the 717W PSU but I would check over your population rules first.

You can disable System Memory Testing in the BIOS if you like.

For reference if I have the error here if it is the one you are seeing:

Alert! Power required exceeds PSU wattage. Check PSU and system configuration.

The system configuration of processor(s), memory modules, and expansion cards may not be supported by the power supplies.

If any system components were just upgraded, return the system to the previous configuration. If the system boots without this warning, then the replaced component(s) are not supported with this power supply. If Energy Smart power supplies are installed, replace them with the High Output power supplies to use the components.

Please let me know how it goes.

Charles,

Swapped to 2x 717W PSUs. memory still at 800MHz. However, after reading manual, this is to be expected as the new 6x 16GB ( in white slots) is 4 Rank, and all others are 4Gb Dual. So my original cry for help answered.

but now:

iDRAC / Power supplied tab shows 2x 717 Max wattages ( FW version 03.02.63)

/System/System Inventory/System Hardware section is empty - "Hardware Inventory is unavailable. Try again later" ( even after selecting the refresh icon). - any way to kick that to rebuild ? it was populated prior to PSU swap.

I am unable to update anything, selecting System services during Boot, a screen showing progress of UEFI boot completes to a blank screen. Have tried c:/SUU.exe from terminal ( running Hyper-v Server ), with no luck.

Bios 6.6.0 set to Bios Boot, iDRAC 2.92.  LCC 1.2.0.57

As R610 seems to be running OK, albeit a very very little bit slower ( especially at boot )  Im wondering if there are any must have advantages to any FW updates, as the 2 main ones are as far as they can go. It would be nice to have the the system services at boot working though. I have d/loaded a specific version SUU-LIN32_17.12.200.229.ISO. but unsure how to use this when running Hyper-v server.

Best Regards

Dennis

Charles-Ray,

  1. changed iDRAC settings as per your above instructions, reboot, no inventory even after refresh - perhaps i did not wait long enough .
  2. put 502W back in, reboot - warned of insufficient power, and restart with minimal frequencies - allowed it to reboot, but got impatient after memory config, as the Dell Bios boot did not appear. So manually shutdown.
  3. swapped back to 717W reboot, now iDRAC reports an inventory with correct PSUs.

Many thanks for your expert help. - where would the community be without your and your colleagues help.

Issue resolved.

BR
