Optiplex 9020 MT - No video, remove RAM get correct error message
Was working fine.
Stopped booting.
Tried:
- Disconnected everything non-vital (all data cables/on board power cables out/pci-e hardware/usb etc.)
- Tried both DVI outs/tried pci-e video card.
- Unplugged/re-plugged all on board connectors.
- 4x memory modules - unplugged/replugged, tried 1x ram stick, tried different modules.
Remove ALL memory, and get 1-3-2 beeps.
Add memory, get no beeps.
Add a disk that should boot - minimal HDD activity.
Add a disk that probably wouldn't boot - HDD lights up for a while.
Any options?

try replace cmos battery w a new CR2032 then clear cmos by motherboard jumper. I am not aware there is a DT in 9020. Is it actually a 9020 SFF?

Thanks. Will give that a go...
I would call it a Desktop, but may be MiniTower in Dell talk... (ie has multiple disk compartment/full size DVD/full size PCI-E cards...)

yes that is a 9020 MT. the power button light is another diagnostic clue. If solid white/blue, mobo works but there may be issue of video. if amber, either mobo or psu has issue. for video test, connect a simple VGA cable from mobo integrated VGA to VGA monitor.

Not much further...
Power button now blinking, either 2-3 or 3-2 (not sure which comes 1st...), but looks like that MAY be indicating a bad system board, memory/CPU failure, or USB??
The power supply test button seems to think the power supply is fine....

remove all ram hdd, gpu, only install one ram stick to test. test each ram individually. if there is a working ram from another pc borrow that to test.
9020 psu is proprietary 8 pin. unless you have another 9020 from which to borrow a psu to test, it is hard to verify psu is working.

Thinkin' the mobo is fried....
Won't even beep with no memory, anymore.
Plug the power in, the fans spin slowly for 10 secs or so, then ramp up to noisy, and stay there...
Have 4 sticks of ram, have tried all 4 individually.
Power button is now a steady amber.
Time to concede, I believe...

PS. When the CMOS reset jumper is set, should the PC not do anything? ie plug in the power, nothing happens, and press the power button, nothing happens...

If you keep the CMOs jumper on the clear cmos pins, motherboard would not power on. That is expected.
yes time to move on.
