Optiplex 3000 CPU Compatibility above i7-12700T

OptiPlex 3000 Tower

OptiPlex 3000 Tower

Dear all,

I have been given an OptiPlex 3000, which I have upgraded the BIOS to 1.24.0 , RAM to 32 GB DDR | 512 WD nvme.

The system comes with the i3-12100. I have seen that it can be upgraded to the i7-12700T or K, and have confirmed this with Dell Support.

My question, is whether it is compatible with the 13th gen CPUs as the motherboard is based on the B660 chipset. This is something that the Dell staff could not provide me an official answer with.

I know that the K version draws up to 125 Watts (the installed PSU is a 180W one) but I am thinking of adding a PSU with the required adapters as I would like also to add an GTX 1660 that is available at this time.
Thank you very much for your time and answer.

Technical specifications for your system indicates the OptiPlex 3000 mini tower supports only 12th generation processors.  Chipset alone does not determine CPU compatibility, the BIOS microcode has to be supported as well.

180w is the base configuration of Dell. You can upgrade to 240w or 300w Dell oem psu.  User validated 460w/500w Dell psu in Inspiron 3910 (which has 12th gen cpu) is also possible.

Concur w Chino on 12th gen cpu for 3000.  the 600 series natively supports 12th gen cpu only. 13/14th gen cpu require a vendor/Dell bios update.  Dell typically writes update but names it a newer model. In this case the new model is Optiplex tower 7010 which is essentially a “3010” in all regards. But the 3000 (and 5000/7000) apparently don’t have the bios update. So 12th gen only.

But OP still can upgrade to i9-12900(k) which are 65(125) w cpu.  The i9 is natively supported by B660 chipset of 3000.  Dell only validated i9 for 5000/7000 which have Q670 chipset.  As long as it is within 600 series chipset family there is no bios restriction to forbid i9.
