Mandatory Motherboard Replacement For Optiplex 9020 MT i7-4776

After doing a atx case swap-out for an Optiplex 9020 MT i7-4776 but unable to boot it without it quickly shutting down, I learned the motherboard was defective, confirmed by a local computer repair shop I took it to that did a diagnostic, the cause of which remains uncertain.

Square Trade was cool about comping me based on the coverage, & the repair shop is now looking for a budget intel gen 4 replacement Motherboard in the $100 range as a solution; however, with the cause of the defect unknown, they strongly advised against investing in a duplicate Dell Motherboard on my dime that could be bricked, based on the upgraded components I used for the swap-out, which otherwise all seem to be working.  So a new brand Motherboard was recommended, which will make my Optiplex a customized, unbranded PC.

For anyone else here who has been in this unfortunate position with my particular model, what kind of Motherboard worked for you without any issues?

There is no such "proprietary 8 pin ATX" Standard

Using buzz words to associate connectors based on the number of pins or fitting into the socket is not helpful.  It is NOT ATX 12V , EPS 12V  or 8 PIN PCI-E

Using those words confuses users into thinking that if it has a number of pins and fits its ok.  It ABSOLUTELY is NOT Ok. Connectors are keyed but impatient users can FORCE the wrong connector into the same 8 pin socket and DESTROY everything.

You need an EPS12v supply with an adapter or the Dell PSU that is PFC and 80 percent efficient.

ATX is 70 percent efficient at best.

AMAZON tends to wayy over price motherboards and CPU.

For $100 it should include and I3 I5 I7 cpu with Intel Graphics.

There are many sizes for 9020

SFF (Small Form Factor)
USFF (Ultra Small Form Factor)
MFF (Micro Form Factor)

Second there are several boards that are similar but use different I/O panel.

I tend to prefer Precision T1700 boards with I/O panel because they have the most features. Absolutely Drop in replacement for 9020 MT when you have the I/O shield.

Also keep in mind that we are talking about a 9020 TOWER not DT , SFF, USFF, AIO, or Micro.

The reason I say this is that the RAM, CPU, Power Supply, etc is interchangeable with the T1700.  Why pay $100 to $200 for a part when you can get a working tower for UNDER $200 that includes Windows 10 OS?

if your upgrade includes a 24/4 pin psu to support a gpu, then it is a good idea to replace defective proprietary 9020 motherboard (using 8 pin ATX) with a standard (m)ATX board that uses 24 pin ATX.  Two Dell OEM boards satisfy this criterion: XPS 8700 and Inspiron 3847. They are Z87 and H81 chipset respectively (9020 has Q87 chipset).  8700 is better.  it has 4 DIMM memory slots. H81 has only 2. 

another good option is Dell optiplex XE2 MT motherboard which also uses proprietary 8 pin ATX and is compatible with 9020 psu.  It has 4 DIMM slots which is better.  Chipset is Q87, same as 9020.

you can find a used 8700, 3847, XE2 board on eBay.

The optional 365w psu supports up to 150W GPU via 75W slot and 75W single six pin adapter. I @speedstep totally agree which is why the T1700 motherboard is the obvious upgrade from 9020 board because it includes secure boot, TPM 1.2, thunderbolt option,  WIN8 Key in BIOS and can use ALL of the components from a 9020 E.G.  CPU Fan, Case Fan, RAM, CPU, Power Supply including the optional 365W unit.

There is even a guy who made his own adapter.

T1M43 365w, Delta (I prefer the Delta, Better Design IMHO)

Moddiy 24 to 8 PSU Adapter CAB359

Other vendors adapters May work but I only trust the Moddiy Adapter if I'm using 3rd party power supply.

I'm too lazy to build my own.
