Dell XPS / SBC Yahoo DSL / D-Link 514 wireless Router HELP

I have a brand new Dell XPS and a brand new SBC Yahoo DSL connection. The modem is a speedstream 5100. I also have a laptop computer that is the reason I purchased a D-Link 514 wireless router. I want to be able to let my family use the Dell desktop while I use my laptop. I can not get the router to work. I have spoken with D-Link tech support three times and SBC tech support once. The last suggestion from D-Link was that there is some program on my computer that is not allowing HTTP connections and I need to figure out what that is. I have tried the suggestion of making sure that my XP firewalls are turned off. I also have restarted the computer, modem and router without success. When the router is in the loop, the computer does not recognize the internet connection. When I take the router out of the loop, I can surf the net. PLEASE HELP, I am going crazy here.....

when the pc is connected to the router are you able to bring up the routers login page by typing 192.168.0.1 in the address bar?

No, I am not able to get to the set-up site. The browser acts like it is searching for a site but never finds one. It also does not give me an error message or a timed-out message. Lights flash on the router but nothing blinks on the modem. Tech support with D-Link did a ping test with the router and it responded. They also had me reset the router and that did not help. Any other thoughts?

try connecting another pc to it, if that pc can ping it but not bring up the login page then theres a problem with the router.

I connected my laptop to the router and was able to ping the router. Unfortunately I never have been able to get the laptop to connect through the DSL before the router was added so it does not really say anything about not being able to get to the internet through the router now. I'm open for more suggestions if you have any.

Anyone have any suggestions for this problem. I have been bounced from one technical support help line to another. Dell says there is nothing in the computer that would be causing the problem. D-Link says that it is the computer. SBC Yahoo DSL says that since I can connect without the router, it is not a problem with them. Can anyone help?

Reason this out.  If the computer can connect to the modem (without the router) then it suggests that the modem and the computer are fine.  If the computer cannot connect to the internet through the router, then it suggests the router is bad.  You don't have to change anything on the computer when you switch the connection between the modem and the router (except to reboot the computer), and if you are using the same network cable, then the only thing that can be wrong is the router.  Have you tried using different router ports?

volcano11 and LAN Lord --- Thank you for all your help and suggestions. The problem has been solved and I am now happily surfing the wireless world. The problem turned out to be on the computer. I had been instructed to remove all connection manager software from the DSL provider. I had removed all that had the providers name, but I missed one with a simple sounding name. D-Link tech support listened as I went line by line through the programs on my computer and pointed out the ones that may have been causing the problems. I then contacted SBC Yahoo DSL and asked them if the program was theirs and if it could be removed. SBC said that it could. After removal of the program from the desktop computer I was able to follow the D-Link instruction manual to complete the setup. Everything is now working as advertised and I am wondering why I didn't get this setup months ago.

I am trying to set up my friend's DI-514 with SBC Yahoo DSL and the speedstream 5100 and XP.  We have been on and off with D-link customer service for over 10 hours.  If they ask me to reset and unplug anything again, I'm going to scream.

What was the final file that was keeping you from connecting?  When we finally get the router configured and click "Connect", the router message says "You are connected or connecting," but we never get an IP address to pull.  We're positive we have the right logon ID & pw as we can connect directly from the computer's ethernet port to the speedstream with no issues.

HELP!!!!

I feel your frustration. It seemed to me like the D-link tech support would do anything to get me off the phone. It was like I was interupting the Superbowl.

Unfortunately I do not remember the program name. I think that it started with a "B". It was within the first 10 or so programs listed when I went into the add/remove software list. Post the names of any programs that you do not recognize and I will let you know if it looks familiar. Before I removed the program, I contacted SBC DSL and confirmed that the program was one of their logon management programs.

The way I was finally able to get D-link to listen and take the time to help me was to say "if you are not able to help me, my next problem solving technique is to return your router to the store and try another maker". The guy really slowed down and helped to pinpoint the problem program.

The name of the program is "Broadjump". When I removed this program, the router worked perfectly.

Although this is a linksys site, I think you will find it helpful.

The SBC/Yahoo software is junk..............you will have problems until you get rid of it. Some have had to go into the registry to dump it.  Anyway, try this link:   http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=69

good luck,
