U2723QE, two MST daisy chain, hub

Took delivery yesterday of two U2723QE. Set up per instructions for "Connecting the Monitor for USB-C Multi-Stream Transport (MST) Function" on page 42 of User's Guide

First tried with both U2723QE attached by MST daisy chain. USB-C from laptop to upstream USB-C input on U2723QE 1. (Input #8 per manual page 12). Black screen on both, with response "USB-C not found".

Next separated the monitors and independently connected to input #8. Both gave black screen.

Next used a different laptop (12 month old Dell XPS). Same problem.

Next swapped out the Dell provided USB-C cables (tried both) with a Thunderbolt 3 cable. Same problem.

Next attached Thunderbolt from PC to a downstream USB-C port on monitor 1. BRAVO! It worked. And daisy chain also worked to monitor 2.

BUT (there's always a BUT) the hub function of the screens don't work. None of the USB-1 ports are active. No surprise, because there is no connection from PC to the upstream USB input on the monitor. So I added a second USB-C to USB-C cable from PC to upstream port #8. Made no difference. The daisy chain video continues to work, but not the hub functionality.

HELP! Is it really possible the Dell has shipped two new monitors, both with faulty upstream USB-C input ports? Or am I missing something?

The pictures are incorrect.

Page 12 states = #5 USB-C port (Video + Data)
Connect to your computer using the USB-C cable.

Page 13 states = #8 USB-C upstream port (This is data ONLY, no video)
Connect to your computer using the USB cable (A to C or C to C). Once the USB cable is connected, you can use the USB downstream connectors on the monitor.

This should be your physical two U2723QE MST daisy chain setup =

PC USB-C port --> USB-C to USB-C cable --> first U2723QE #5 USB-C port (Video + Data) (Menu- Display- MST On)

first U2723QE #6 DP out port --> DP to DP cable --> second U2723QE #4 DP in port (Menu- Display- MST Off)

PC USB-A port --> USB-A to USB-C cable --> second U2723QE #8 USB-C upstream port

The thunderbolt port passes both video and USB data between the first monitor and the PC.  But it takes two connections to the second monitor, one for video and one for data.

To get the USB Ports working on Monitor 2, you must connect the USB-C upstream port (port #8) of Monitor 2.  I made the connection back to Monitor 1, using any of the open USB-A ports (port #9-12).  If that doesn't work, you should be able to make the connection back to the PC.

Thanks for the prompt and correct advice Chris. As per my post, I'd already got the daisy chain video working by ignoring the picture in the manual and doing trial and error.

After hiccups, the USB hub functionality of monitor 1 works. So we now have a functioning system.

But the hub functionality does not work on monitor 2 via the DP connection from monitor 1. Should it?

BTW, I'm just a home user, not technical. I just followed the picture in the manual for set up. Very disappointing it is wrong. Consequences included me first speaking for 1 hour to Dell phone support from Malaysia. She couldn't resolve and gave me a return goods authorization for these 2 expensive monitors! I persevered and found how to connect via port #5. But still with hub problem I had unsuccessful 1 hour chat with another Dell tech (don't know location) . So because of error in manual, I've wasted ~ 8 hours, Dell has had 3 staff involved for 2+ hours, and almost had an RTA executed for dead on arrival monitors. Take away is that you need to properly proof your manuals.
