U2711 - left side flickering green

Hello, I have a three year old U2711 and this morning for the first time the left side of the screen only is flickering green. This happens whether the cable is attached or not and no matter which input source is selected. I have tried powering down the monitor, unplugging it for several minutes, rebooting my laptop but nothing has changed.

The attached photo shows the monitor powered on with no input cables attached (I usually use a thunderbolt-displayport cable to connect my mac).

Any ideas what is going on and if there is anything that I can do to fix it?

Thanks,

.seth

Hi Seth,

I suggest you to run built-in diagnostic tool that allows you to determine whether the screen abnormality is due to an inherent problem in the monitor, or due to a problem in the computer and video card.

The following are the steps for running the built-in diagnostics tool:

  1. Ensure that the screen is clean—the screen surface should be free from dust particles.
  2. Unplug the video cable(s) from the rear side of the computer or monitor. The monitor, then, goes into the self-test mode.
  3. Press and hold the 1st and 4th buttons on the front panel, simultaneously, for 2 seconds. A gray screen appears.
  4. Carefully check the screen for abnormalities.
  5. Press the 4th button on the front panel, again. The color of the screen changes to red.
  6. Check the display for any abnormalities.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the green, blue, and white colors on the screen.

The test is complete when the white screen appears. You can close the built-in diagnostic tool by pressing the 4th button, again. If you do not detect any screen abnormalities by using the built-in diagnostic tool, check the video card and the computer.

Note: You can run the built-in diagnostic tool only when the video cable is unplugged, and the monitor is in the self-test mode.

Please post the results.

Hi Seth,

I suggest you to try resetting the monitor to factory settings using the On-screen display menu and check if that helps.

Please post the results.

Hi Nikhil,

Reset to factory default did not help. I tried running LCD conditioning for about 10 minutes and that did not make any noticeable change either.

I notice that the quality of the interference is dynamic, the static rolls up the screen and it goes through phases where it is almost unnoticeable for a few seconds and cycles back to being extremely obvious.

Thanks,

Thanks Nikhil,

I did the self test and the problem manifests there as well. I did not see it on the gray screen, subtle issues on red and green, very evident issues on blue and black. I have photos of the screen during self-test that I could post but the issue is clearly present. I only see trouble on the left side of the screen with a sharp line exactly down the center, the right side appears normal.

Thanks,

.seth

sethco,

The monitor is faulty. If still under warranty, Dell Technical Support will replace it via a like for like exchange.

Thanks Chris,

Unfortunately my three year warranty expired two weeks ago. Do you know if there are paid exchange programs available or any way to find out what a repair would cost? I really like this monitor, hopefully I can get it working well again without too much expense.

Hi Seth,

You may want to take the monitor to a local technician who can check if it can be repaired.

Please let me know me know if you have any further queries.

Dell does not repair monitors or sell internal monitor components. We do not even have monitor repair/disassembly documentation. We simply replace them while under warranty. You can try these 3rd party repair sites:

Hi, I have the same exact problem with my 2711. The problem started to show when the display was 3 years and 2 weeks old! This really . Do you found a solution? I already tried a local repair shop, but they can't identify the cause...

Mine flickers on the right side, with white horizontal dotted lines at random locations. I can fix it by sliding the monitor up and down a few times. I suspect some dirty contacts are at fault.

Also, I found a youtube video called "Faulty Dell U2711" that explains how to fix it, but I'm not enthusiastic about opening up my monitor.
