U2422HE, not detecting USB-C video when connected to desktop

Dell U2422HE is not recognizing video input over USB-C when plugging in laptop whilst already connected to desktop. USB-C passing data and power fine (laptop charges, keyboard mouse connected to U2422HE work), but no video. Video input of laptop is detected fine if the desktop USB cable is not plugged in. No impact on whether desktop video (DP) plugged in. I'm assuming there ought to be a setting in the U2422HE to specify a priority list of inputs to detect? If there's no solution to get this to 'automatically' work, can always switch auto-detect input off and manually select.

Setup details:

Laptop: Dell Latitude 5420

Desktop: PC w/ Nvidia RTX 3050 (3xDP, 1xHDMI), motherboard Asrock H670M-ITX/ax

Laptop -> U2422HE via USB-C (data + video)

Desktop -> U2422HE video via DP, data via USB-C to USB-C

Both USB-C cables are not the originals from the box (too short). Both are Cable Matters 5Gbps 1.8m USB C (believe USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 / SuperSpeed USB 5Gbit/s)

Before Dell agents can troubleshoot, you will need to re-configure the components so as to be using the manufacturer U2422HE provided 1M cabling. Then see if the issue can be replicated.

"I'm assuming there ought to be a setting in the U2422HE to specify a priority list of inputs to detect?"

The U2422HE OSD Menu- Input Source offers two Auto Select options =

Auto Select = On or Off

Auto Select for USB-C --> =

Prompt for Multiple Inputs: Always displays the “Switch to USB-C Video Input” message for you to choose whether to switch or not.

Yes: Always switches to USB-C video input (without asking) when the USB-C cable is connected.

No: Never automatically switches to USB-C video input when the USB-C cable is connected.
NOTE: Auto Select for USB-C is available only when Auto Select is on.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the info provided - I forgot to mention that I have tested this with the provided cables and the behaviour is the same.

I get the same behaviour (USB C video input is not picked up if USB C data only is plugged into desktop) when Auto select for USB-C is set to Prompt for multiple inputs, Yes, and No

CEardley,

Workaround:

Disconnect the USB uplink cable from the first-connected machine.

Connect the USB-C cable and auto input is selected it will automatically switch to the new device.

Dell Engineering is aware of the issue and is working to resolve this for those reporting the issue. This issue will be updated once a final solution release date is known.

Hi all,

Thanks for the useful responses above. I figured this morning that the issue may be because I'm connected to the PC using DP, and perhaps the monitor was getting confused between the video signal from DP and over USB C (using DP protocol). As such, I've changed to connect to the PC over HDMI and the problem no longer occurs.

This thread can be closed. Thanks again!

Any updates on this issue?

My partner bought two of these monitors recently and is close to smashing them and/or returning them. Every morning she has to disconnect all cables and reconnect everything.

Will there be a firmware update soon or do we need to send the monitors back and wait for the next (hopefully fixed) release?

@DELL-Jesse Lis there any estimate on when Dell Engineering may have a solution? This really limits possible use cases for this monitor.

Hi Jesse, is there any update on this? Despite my suggestion in the thread above that I found a suitable workaround for this, I am still running into the issue whereby the monitor does not recognise display input form my laptop via USB-C 90W if the upstream USB-C (data only) cable is connected to a (powered off) desktop PC. Despite not recognising display input from the laptop, it passes input from USB devices connected to the monitor to the PC. Any fix to this would be greatly appreciated as this more-or-less breaks the core functionality of the monitor's hub...

The U2422HE drivers page shows a November 10, 2022 released M3B408 firmware. Open your U2422HE Menu- Others to see what firmware is currently installed. If your current firmware is OLDER than M3B408, then install M3B408 and retest.
