U2419HC, U2417H, daisy chain

Can you help with a monitor set up please?

I would like to daisy chain a U2417H and U2419HC.

My laptop is an HP EliteBook 840 G3 Notebook with:

(1) USB Basic Type-C

(1) DisplayPort

I've had a look at the Daisy Chain Explained post:

https://www.dell.com/community/Monitors/Monitor-Daisy-Chaining-explained/m-p/5177869

Is this example from the post the solution please?

U2717D DP/MST Daisy Chain

Computer video DP out port --> U2717D DP to mDP cable --> #1 U2717D mDP in port (center) (Menu- Display- MST On)
#1 U2717D DP out port (right) --> U2717D DP to mDP cable --> #2 U2717D mDP in port (center) (Menu- Display- MST Off)

Or, can I use the USB-C Basic port on the laptop? I think it's an IN port rather than an OUT port.

Also, which monitor would be the slave in this set up please?

Many Thanks, BA

So I think it's sorted. In the U2419HC manual it shows DP cables for both connections. It is also in this KB article:

https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-al/sln293813/how-to-daisy-chain-multiple-monitors-using-displayport-multi-stream-transport-mst?lang=en

(Head on desk again though at breaking the first commandent to RTM. So sorry!!!)

So I used two DP cables and turned MST on for both slave and master and all working fine so far:

PC DP out port --> U2419HC DP to DP cable --> U2419HC DP in port (Menu- Display- MST On)
U2419HC DP out port --> U2417H DP to DP cable --> U2417H DP in port (Menu- Display- MST On)

Two other tips for anyone else passing through:

- Make sure you use the right IN/OUT DP ports on the monitors. Though it shames me to say it, it's in the manual.

- One of the displays was upside down when I connected everything up so I had to change the orientation in display settings:

Display > Screen Resolution > Orientation  Landscape, flipped

BTW I also tried the first suggestion in the second post but with MST On:

PC DP out port --> U2419HC DP to DP cable --> U2419HC DP in port (Menu- Display- MST On)
U2419HC DP out port --> U2417H DP to mDP cable --> U2417H mDP in port (Menu- Display- MST Off On)

It still didn't seem to work. I'm sure it's probably something I'm probably doing wrong.

Many Thanks

The first monitor in chain is Master MST On, second is slave MST Off. The HP EliteBook 840 G3 might need its AC power adapter connected to it. USB Type-C is bidirectional.

PC DP out port --> U2419HC DP to DP cable --> U2419HC DP in port (Menu- Display- MST On)
U2419HC DP out port --> U2417H DP to mDP cable --> U2417H mDP in port (Menu- Display- MST Off)

-or-

PC USB Type-C port --> U2419HC USB Type-C cable --> U2419HC USB Type-C port (Menu- Display- MST On)
U2419HC DP out port --> U2419HC DP to DP cable --> U2417H DP in port (Menu- Display- MST Off)

Amazing.Thank you!!

I will give it a try. The U2419HC arrives Weds and it's good to know I don't need to buy additional cables. Can't wait!

Or can you tell me if it is better to order a DP to VGA rather than HDMI to VGA please?

Many Thanks

It will not matter. Both will do the max of 1920x1080 60Hz on the U2417H.

The U2419HC arrived yesterday! I tried both configurations of cabling and unfortunately neither of them worked.

PC DP out port --> U2419HC DP to DP cable --> U2419HC DP in port (Menu- Display- MST On)
U2419HC DP out port --> U2417H DP to mDP cable --> U2417H mDP in port (Menu- Display- MST Off)

The U2417H could not recognise the mDP input.

PC USB Type-C port --> U2419HC USB Type-C cable --> U2419HC USB Type-C port (Menu- Display- MST On)
U2419HC DP out port --> U2419HC DP to DP cable --> U2417H DP in port (Menu- Display- MST Off)

No USB signal from device

After a lot of head scratching I wondered if it was the laptop and this was then confirmed by a quck Google Search!  Ung! Defeated and deflated I put my head on my desk and didn't pick it up again for a very long time.

I came across a Reddit post where someone used an HP USB-C dock:

"I bought a Dell USB-c dock and connected it to the laptop via the USB-c port. Power delivery didn't work, as expected, so I do have to plug in the HP power supply, but after installing DisplayLink drivers I was able to extend the desktop to two additional connected monitor"

https://www.reddit.com/r/Hewlett_Packard/comments/bgqq80/usbc_style_dock_with_elitebook_840_g3/

I think I will just go with DP to DP for the U2419HC and order an HDMI to VGA for the U2471.

The only consolation is that the two monitors look great next to each other!!!

Anyways, thanks so much for taking time out of your day to help with this!!!!

Muchos Gracias
