Supported CPU List for Dell Latitude E6420
Latitude E6420
Hello, I know I might be a bit old-fashioned, but I'd like to know if, with the latest BIOS version for the Dell Latitude E6420, which is A25 (https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=k57t8), I can upgrade my CPU from an i5-2520M to an Ivy Bridge CPU. Thank you.

These were never shipped with that CPU, so it's a "try it an see" -- but there's a good chance the system won't recognize that CPU and if it does not, will not POST.

The E6420 supports only Sandy Bridge (2nd gen) CPUs. You need an E6430 for Ivy Bridge (3rd gen) support.
Since an E6430 system is worth as little as $30 complete and working, you may as well just replace the system than pay for a mainboard upgrade.

I thought there might be backward compatibility, so I still have a bit of hope and am planning to buy the i7-3610QE. But meh.

@ejn63 Thank you so much, I guess I'll choose some safe options
