USB Flash Drive cannot access

When I plug a flash drive into any USB port it is recognized and an icon for "E: removable disk" shows in My Computer. However, when I try to access the drive it says "Please insert a disk in Drive E:"
Any suggestions ? Inspiron 1100 Windows XP

You need to tell us what system you have. Are your their any bangs in device manager. Can you plug this flash drive into another system and see if works. Can you format the drive. Did this flash drive ever work in this computer. If so when did it work. Can you plug anything into the usb port and see if it is working.
