Unable to update BIOS"ac adapter and battery must be plugged in" they are plugged in.

I have a Inspiron 6400 w/ Windows XP. I wanted to update the bios and i am getting the message"ac adapter and battery must be plugged in before system bios can be flashed" They are both attached correctly. The laptop works fine otherwise. But now that I look the laptop indicates it is on ac all the time (on the task bar in windows)even when it is on battery alone.
Also  the LED that is on the right side bottom of the display on the hinge, the battery LED is always on and orange (doesn't that mean the battery needs to be charged) when on battery power but When I test the battery itself it shows 5 green lights.
This is just out of warrenty (< 2 weeks). Could this be related to the battery recall. This battery is not a recall battery but the model is. How do I flash the bios?
Thanks

Sounds like your charger board has partly croaked and isn’t recognizing the AC adapter correctly any more.  The cure is to replace the charger board which, as it’s part of the motherboard, means replacing that.

That's baloney.

Bet my life your battery is only conducting power. I got the same and found my battery only lasted a minute. A new battery fixed it all. Jeck, such the fear monger.
