I have a the dell power adapter that came with my Inspiron 5555 it is a 45w adapter. My computer has recently started saying that it is unrecognized and will not run to specs. What is happening?

Thanks!

I already replaced the power jack. The computer works fine with another AC adapter. Wondering if this is a known issue as the computer is barely over a year old.

There are three possibilities:

The adapter is bad, the DC jack is bad, or the mainboard is bad.

Try a new AC adapter first.  If that doesn't solve the recognition issue, replace the DC jack:

And if that doesn't solve it, replace the mainboard.

If it works with another adapter, then the one it doesn't work with, is the faulty part.

Broken wires at the plug, a bad DC jack or a bad power circuit are the three possible causes.  It's not clear why you decided to replace the DC jack, because it is the adapter that was the cause (if as you say, another one worked).  Or is the adapter in question a third-party non-Dell unit (these will power the system but do not have the circuit necessary to close the charge circuit to the battery)?

It was not a broken DC jack. It was loose. There was no broken pin.

The leverage required to break that jack loose from its mooring came from the adapter plug -- and it doesn't take much force on the plug or wire to break the connection inside the plug.  Try the adapter that's not working on your system in another system - if it doesn't work there, the adapter is bad.

It can happen to any adapter - search and you'll find that power jack and adapter problems are common to every make of notebook, cell phone -- you name it. If it has a power adapter, the jack and adapter are common trouble spots.

Something caused that jack to come loose - it wasn't built that way.  Chances are that it was too much force applied to it when the jack was inserted or disconnected.  Since you replaced the jack and still had the problem, chances are the jack was just fine - and the adapter was the problem all along.

I replaced the DC jack because it was faulty. It would not charge (or power) even with a good adapter. There is no visible damage to the adapter. As I said, I was inquiring as to rather there is a known issue with these adapters. It is a Dell adapter, shipped with the Inspiron 5555 (as I said) - not a 3rd party adapter.

the jack was not broken from it's mooring. rather the adapter is bad or not is not in question. It is clear that the adapter is bad. my question is rather this is a known issue with this adapter.

It's likely that any force that was enough to break the  DC jack, also damaged the adapter -- it's the center pin in the adapter that completes the charge circuit.  Any displacement of that pin can break the circuit and cause the adapter to be unrecognized.

I did not replace the jack and have the same problem. I had a different problem. I did not mention the jack because it was a different problem. the Jack was causing the computer to get no power at all. The computer booted up with the original adapter after replacing the DC jack; however a new problem emerged. It started saying that the AC adapter was not properly charging and that it could not be identified. I used an adapter known to be good and determined that the adapter in addition to the jack were bad. the jack was not broken loose. it was no longer tight when the adapter was plugged in.
