microsoft bluetooth mouse

I have a dell inspiron 8500 laptop with built in bluetooth and the microsoft bluetooth mouse does not seem to work with the laptop or even be detected or recognize.  Any advice from anyone.  Should I just return it and get my money back.

I have & use the Microsoft Bluetooth IntelliMouse Explorer.
Works flawlessly with the internal Dell Bluetooth TM300 module.
The mouse bottons cannot be reassigned with the Dell Bluetooth drivers installed.
I uninstalled my Dell Bluetooth drivers, and upon reboot SP2 detected, installed & configured the TM300 with Microsoft drivers.
After installation of IntelliPoint 5.2 software, everything still works, and the mouse buttons can now be reassigned to my heart's content.
The IntelliPoint 5.2 software also manages the Alps touchpad just fine (it's seen as a PS/2 mouse).

did you right click on the mouse icon once it was discovered and pair it to the laptop after connection?

I can get the mouse to work with my inspiron 8600 and the internal bluetooth card, but it requires "rediscovering" each time I shut down the computer or go into standby.  Quite inconvenient.  Any suggestions?

Are you using the Dell BlueTooth drivers or the built in ones within SP2?

When I try to pair it, it asks for a pin number.  I tried to pair without a pin number, and it just timed out.  Then I tried again with a pin number (made up one) of 6 digits and it just timed out again.  Then I tried with a shorter pin, 3 digits, same result.  I can't get the "pairing" to complete. 
What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure.  I didn't update any bluetooth drivers.  I installed the intellimouse with the cd, lost my touchpad drivers, had the same on-again, off-again problem with the mouse, and read on this forum somewhere that the msintellimouse install does get rid of the touchpad drivers.   So I uninstalled the intellimouse, then tracked down the touchpad drivers on Dell's site and reinstalled them, then I had the laptop find the bt mouse and install it on it's own.  I have not knowingly installed/uninstalled any bt drivers, so I'm using whatever came installed on the laptop.

Well, I tried to figure this out so as not to look as dumb as I am, but I can't figure out what "TM300" is that I'm supposed to uninstall.  So I've gotta ask...

Is it the bluetooth software?

TM300 = TrueMobile 300; you can remove it via the Control Panel's Add/Remove applet under "Dell BlueTooth Software".

Here's how I install & reassign the buttons on my MS IntelliMouse Explorer for BlueTooth - works flawlessly -

1. Uninstall Alps touchpad drivers.

2. Uninstall Dell drivers for TM300.

3. Reboot, let SP2 detect, install & configure it's native drivers for the TM300.

4. Install the MS IntelliPoint 5.2 software, reboot.

5. Cancel out of the IntelliPoint Wizard when it prompts you to plug in the Microsoft BT transceiver.

6. Turn the MS mouse on, make it discoverable, and it's installed in about 5 seconds.

7. Use the IntelliPoint software to reassign & customize the mouse to your heart's content.

The SP2 bluetooth drivers are very robust, and the IntelliPoint 5.2 software controls the Alps touchpad just fine (it sees it as an MS compatible PS/2 mouse); no problems with not using Dell's "SP2 compatible" unsigned TM300 drivers, A05 being their latest attempt.

Okay, the mouse is on, and I'm pushing the discoverable button, but nothing is happening.  Do I need to open up a bluetooth window?  When you say "turn it on" I assume that you mean put in the batteries and push the button.  I've done that, it is "red" underneath and is on, but the laptop is ignoring it!

Mouse works great!  I can turn off the computer and back on, no rediscover necessary.  Same when it goes into hibernate.  Fantastic!  Thank you so much, wish Dell could have helped me as easily as you did!
 
I have a couple of questions.  I still would like to control the touchpad. The touchpad works, but it won't let me assign it's scroll function, and I'd also like to speed up the pointer in the touchpad, as it's really slow compared to the alps software.  If I try to reinstall the alps software, will that blow the whole thing up?
 
Is there a switch to turn the mouse off, or does it simply hibernate itself after a while?

Don't know what to tell you except follow EVERY step I've outlined a couple posts above.

No problem.  Thanks again.  I've been trying to install this for a week, and now it works great.
 
I figured this bluetooth stuff MUST actually work, but no one could help me get it going.  Surprising that in the end it was the Dell software that was screwing everything up. 
 
One last question, if you please:
 
Is there a button to turn off the mouse?

Just speed up the mouse pointer movement...unfortunately, installing the Alps software screws with the IntelliMouse software.
