laptop dead, ticking noise when charged

hello,

so my dell laptop is dead. it got handled a little rougher during transport then wished for but still not to be expected. i bought it 2nd hand so warrenty probably is not an option even though it still is quite young, dont have the paperwork with me atm anyways.

so no response whatsoever on anything i try. putting the charger in will generate a ticking noise. tried power button after removing the battery but still the same sound. it seems to derive from a square metal part on the.motherboard next to where the battery is connected to the motherboard. number on it is 2r2416303, above it on the motherboard is written pl102, pl105, BATT. the part gets insanely hot after attaching the charger so it pulled it out as fast as i could. tried different chargers as wel result was the same.

the part seems to have something do with the charging, is there a way repairing this

? and what part is broken?perhaps the power plug is broken?

thanks and goodnight!

Hi hallohallo,

Thanks for posting.

Apologies that your system is not working as you expected.

Depending on the model of Laptop you have, parts may be available for it like the motherboard, as from your description that may have failed.  Parts may be available from Dell Spare Parts, Parts-People.com, and Discount Electronics.

One thing to remember, is that sometimes the motherboard may be more expensive than replacing the computer.

hello robert thanks for the reaction. iimight order some parts what i do wonder about though is what the hEating  and ticking of the silver metal part is indicating. is the input plug broken, the metal part or some other part?

It's likely a power relay issue.  Remove the battery and try powering up on AC only -- if that doesn't get the system going, while there's a slim chance it's the DC jack, it's overwhelmingly probable the mainboard is toast and will need to be replaced.

You haven't said what model system you have, but if the system is more than 3 years old - or a very low end model -- you're going to be faced with several hundred dollars just for a board -- unless it's a higher-end system, it's likely that replacing the system makes more sense than replacing the mainboard.

hello ein thanks for the reply. the model is a p31f001 good specs touch screen etc, lovely laptoo overal. dont have the full specs since im literally on the.other side of the planet from the paperwork. (from nl to new zealand) might be the.problem im on a rural area and the electrics might be a bit unstable in volts etc, and they are using different plugs, have a small fitting for that. but my phone is having none of the.problems.

went tinkering for a bit seems there is a bit white-ish what looks like corrosive material around the areas of the ac adapter. really can't understand if and how moist got into it, never zeen it snd still dont. the adapter is in an acid bath to remove the corrosive and and after water snd drying will see if it helps. i do wonder how it could.have happened and if it screwed up other parts of the laptop (battery, motherboard etc.) or if the battery or motherboard was screwed and then screwed tup the ac adapter.

what do you think?

At a minimum, you'll be replacing the mainboard - this is an XPS 9530, so that means replacing just about everything inside except for the battery and memory modules.  Depending on the CPU, these run between $400-550 -- so the repair could wind up as much as $600-750 with labor.
