Inspiron 8600 burning smell

I went back 10 pages and didn't see any questions about this.  I've had my laptop for just over 2 years and today it began to give off a burning plastic smell.  Its strongest right over the keyboard and at the headphone holes.  Any idea what would cause this?  There's no overheating and no smell near the battery.  I really just want to know if its something that will pass or if I should really be worried about my computer crashing or something.

thanks for any help.

I'd be more concerned about it catching on fire than just crashing. Copy off any personal files you need and do regular backups, and I wouldn't leave the thing running (or plugged in) when you're not with it if it's still giving off that smell.

Stop using it immediately!! Disconnect it and pull out the battery asap. Heat is what makes the batteries explode. Then contact Dell--in or out of warranty. Don't burn yourself when removing the battery.

I would not be so quick to think Dell wants to hear about it. I sent emails and reported to BBB and CPS and to date have had yet to hear anything back from Dell. It been way over a month now. Mine got so hot that it burned my leg. I think why dell did not reply is my Battery is not on their call back list.

It's not the battery itself that overheats and causes fires. It's the heat of the computer or leaving it in a hot place like a parked car. Dell wants to hear about all overheating laptops. Have you cleaned out the dust? Do you have it on a hard flat surface? Are all vents unblocked?

yes I've got it set on a desk, there's nothing blocking it.  how do I clean out the dust?  I haven't done that.

the battery isn't hot at all.  actually its really cool as is my whole computer.  if its not overheating could it still catch fire?

the burning smell will go away eventually - usually a day or two after the fire department leaves.

no - just kidding. as noted by the other posters, you should call dell and tell then your system is emitting a burning smell. they will want to check it out and make sure it is safe.

seriously? MaryG - just a friendly heads-up. Dell has had a little problem with laptop batteries overheating lately. They recalled about 4.1 million of them.
to the best of my knowledge, i don't think ANY portable computer has ever spontaneously combusted due to being left in a car while not running. if the inside of the car got hot enough to catch things on fire, wouldn't everything else catch on fire too?

I think it was just a figure of speech.;)

no, a figure of speech is "hotter than a 5 dollar pistol" or something like that. that was a mis-statement, presented as fact. she says:

"It's not the battery itself that overheats and causes fires. It's the heat of the computer or leaving it in a hot place like a parked car."

when indeed it IS the battery itself that overheats and causes fires (in the recent cases anyway). :smileywink:
