cd player

My Dell, Inspiron laptop has a cd player.  The tray won't open, and the computer does not recognize that it has a cd/ dvd player. What do I do??? Does it have to do with installing a driver?

Hi PAUL ITTNER,

Please check if the CD/DVD drive is detected in the Windows and also in BIOS.  To check in Windows, click Start and click on Computer.  To go to BIOS restart the system and tap F2 at a startup.  Let me know the status and also the system model (e.g. 5521 etc.)

I tried what you suggested,(not sure if I did it correctly) and the cd player still does not work. I have a Inspiron N5010

Hi paul ittner,

As requested earlier, kindly check if the optical drive is detected in the BIOS. Restart the system and at startup tap the F2 key to open the BIOS screen. Check what is listed for SATA ODD. Reply with the finding.

Hi Dell, Sujatha K,

I found the BIOS information section on my computer. In the information system I found the area for the CD-ROM. No information was available about it, so I'm guessing that the computer does not detect that it is there at all. It used to work, and has not been physically damaged, so I'm guessing it needs a new driver? Please help me to fix it.  Thank You

Hi paul ittner,

I would like to know what is listed for SATA ODD in the BIOS.

In case it is not listed as shown in the above picture, I suspect the drive is not detected by the system. Try reseating the drive and check if it is detected in the BIOS. Click on the following link for the service manual:

Note: Click on Optical Drive for instruction to reseat the CD/DVD drive.
