No Audio Output Device is installed.

Sometime this November 2021 my audio stopped working but only in Windows 10.

When I boot to Dell Diagnostics it passes the audio test and audio can be heard coming from speakers.

When I boot to WinPE 10-8 Sergei Strelec I also hear audio coming from speakers.

The device manager in Windows 10 shows the devices as working normally however the speaker icon near the notification area has a red X on it and hovering the mouse over it shows "No Audio Output Device is installed."

I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers and did an in place reinstall of Windows 10 21H2. The problem occurred on 21H1.

It's happening on a Dell Inspiron 3541.

The only thing that worked was to reinstall Windows keeping nothing.

The audio works now.

Try Googling No Audio Output Device is installed Windows 10, and see if any of the discussions work for you.

Uninstall Realtek driver from the Apps Settings in windows 10. Type Settings onto search box, select Apps & Features, click on Realtek driver and then Uninstall. Hopefully this way, you'll delete all traces of Realtek driver in the computer registry.

To Reinstall; click on the link below, look to the right and then select your Dell model number.

Drivers & Downloads | Dell US

In your Dell Product Support page, download / install latest Realtek (Audio) driver. If the latest Realtek driver didn't fix the audio problem, download / install an older version of the Audio driver from your Dell Product Support page to see if it will fix the Audio problem.

After trying the older drivers I have the same problem.

I suspect it is a Windows update. How do I do that?

I may have to format the partition and start from scratch.

If you haven't done so yet, run windows update troubleshooter to see if that will fix Audio problem.

Windows Update Troubleshooter (microsoft.com)

If all your troubleshooting failed, then it's time to reinstall windows 10.

Uninstalling ALL audio devices through the device manager (including deleting the associated driver software) and restarting the laptop fixed the issue for me.
